Pecking Order

HI,

I have read the threads on pecking order, but I have two specific questions that I've put at the bottom. I've laid out my situation. I'd appreciate any insight at all!

I had 2 drakes and a hen for a few weeks that have been together for a year (mama and her babies). I just introduced two runner hens. There is lots of chest bumping, feather pulling, etc between the original hen, one of the drakes, and one of the runner hens. I know there is a pecking order and that needs to be established, but....

My questions are:

1. How do I know how much is too much. Obviously I don't want a duck seriously hurt.

2. They will have to be housed together....do I house them together tonight or separate for a while. I can probably put a divider in their house for a while if you guys recommend I do that.

I am a little nervous as I am new to ducks!

I wouldn't just toss them all together and let them work it out, not at night anyway, put up a divider of some kind, preferably some kind of fencing so they can all see each other, During the day let them all out together if the newbies are able to get away from the originals Ducks can and will hurt each other seriously, but usually work things out over time. when they are all together someone needs to be there to intervene if things get out of control . and treats brought out when all together may help elevate alot of tension. Hopefully Amiga who has recently went through this can give you even more tips on how best to inter grate.

It is best to proceed slowly. Did you keep them seperated when you first brought the runners home?

If the runners are brand new, I would seperate them at night and if possible during the day for a while. 30 days is recommended when introducing new birds so that they are quarantined and don't introduce anything to the existing flock. Or if the problems are constant, seperate them.

I would say that either constant harrassment or blood is too much. They should be able to sort themselves out but it can take a little time.

No, I didn't separate them. I had asked around and was told it would be fine. My fault.

It's been about an hour and already the new runner hen who was engaging with two of my original flock just waddles away from them. They will be separated at night for a while, in the same house, but divided so they can't hurt each other. I just went out and because none of my flock (they are all rescues that were sort of handed to me) are very people-friendly, decided they'd rather be together than near me, so that's a good sign. They have ample room to be away from each other...about 1/4 acre to free range and I have multiple water areas so they can keep themselves separate.

Ugh, I feel like a bad duck owner all ready, but fingers crossed this will work out.

Separate them at night for several days, and all should be fine.
