Pecking Questions...

I used to have 5 barred rocks in a coop no bigger than yours but I let them out at 7 each morning and put them away at nightfall. During the day they had full access to my yard. I never had any pecking issues and they were a happy little flock. Until your new coop is done, try letting them free range. If you're worried about aerial predators you could try putting some hiding spots around the yard. Some cinderblocks with boards or galvanized metal panels across the top would work as a hiding spot from hawks. You don't need anything fancy, just something they can dart under.
