pecking unmercifully..

I ordered the peepers for my birds. I can't wait till they get here. I can't stand the worry.

I almost always give a bird the chance to recover. I have been amazed at how some birds have completely recovered.

Pecking can be caused by a number of things. Boredom, lack of protein, heat, to name a few.

The given remedy in Britain was Stockholm Tar, which is horrible black gooey tar, it might be the same as Pine Tar in US?. It is horrid stuff but it does work. The poor picked on bird hates it but, more importantly, so do the peckers. It gets stuck to everything & everything gets stuck to it. The peckers do not like it on their beaks & soon desist.

As a precaution, it might be an idea to try feeding the hens some dry cat food, just in case there is a slight protein deficiency. Feeding meat to chickens is illegal in UK, but lots of people do it anyway.

I ordered pinless peepers from eggcartons.com @ 2pm on thursday and I got them from UPS @ noon on Friday...! Granted they are in MA and Im in NY. but still... that never happens!

The ordered peepers have not come yet. The pecking goes on. I removed the two major peckers- put them in a dog cage until buyer comes (was supposed to come yesterday). I put the pecked one in the shed while the others are in run. Then they (all the others) pecked another one who had been slightly pecked last week. Bleeding by tail- put on blukote and Put her in cage in coop. My coop is 16X8 10 foot ceiling. The run is 10X10. I have 13 chickens-selling 6 if this guy shows up. Giving them greens to play with. I'm running out of cages!! any suggestions until peepers come.????

I am so sorry

I use tea tree oil-the real stuff-real essential oil. I know, I know, there's some website out there that says the stuff will kill chickens. I've used it for over two years now and not only does it NOT kill chickens but it heals the pecked on part and keeps everyone else from pecking them anymore. It's also a great way to keep the birds from pecking on a new bird. We keep tea tree oil all over the house for healing owies on kids, owies on animals and pecking on birds.

I am going to orders some peepers too - i have 4 new hens and 1 new roo to introduce to my 6 remaining hens, and since the fire killed their roo, they have been mean and grumpy( i am sure they are still in pain, as their crops and wings are still singed and healing) they are not trying to kill each other, but pecking hard on others heads. I am afraid that when we do mix them all together tho, there will be bigger problems.

thanks for the info on them!
