Usually I can search this site and find an answer to my question in previous posts.
Apparently, this is a first for BYC.
How do I keep our dog from peeing on the chickens?
Our neutered male dog is extremely territorial and will mark everything he claims as his own, which includes the chicken run and inevitably any poor unsuspecting chicken within shot of him. It’s disgusting and I’m not sure how to stop this behavior. He only marks when no one is looking then he stays away from the run while we’re outside.
I need a way to keep him from peeing on them but still allowing him access to patrol the area. He’s claimed them as his property, so he doesn’t bark at them through the chicken run & our dogs are never allowed access to chickens. They are the best backyard security I’ve ever had. Absolutely nothing breaches our property line and survives, which is great. But a chicken wet from dog urine is the worst smell ever...
any suggestions.

Well, yes, I have a solution but you won't like it.
I have poultry netting enclosing a 1/3 acre area of my property where my coop and run are. The netting is powered by a 10,000 volt charger.
The neighbors dog, who incidentally killed one of my chickens when she flew out of the pen, peed on the fence and got a nifty jolt to his man parts.
So I'm certain if you run a few strands of hot wires around the run, he will eventually be self taught that peeing on the chickens is a very bad idea. AND you've got the added security from the hot wires!
It's a win, win situation!!

Ive never used hot wire before. mainly because I don’t want to accidentally get shocked. Also, growing up I always heard stories of boys burning their business down to a nub from peeing on hotwire. Im assuming that’s probably untrue? I actually train dogs & have used a shock collar a few times but I generally prefer a Squirt gun shot to the head. Problem is, this dog has always been a sneaky marker and I can’t squirt him if I don’t catch him in the act. How do you wire the gate area? Or is that just left clear. Also, is it set far enough away so the chickens aren’t at risk of a premature frying?

Mine also pees on the run fence though at least he doesn't AIM at the chickens, but some of the chickens are attracted to it and walk towards him while he's peeing... sooner or later, one is going to get showered. 😰
It’s not pleasant. But at least the dog is claiming g the chickens as his property and not actively trying to get through the run to eat them. which is the only thing worse than a peepee chicken
