peep, peep, peep

The girls are getting so cheeky! They take turns hopping on top of the feeder like they are playing king of the mountain. The three that happen to be below jump up and bump/peck at little feet of the one atop the feeder until she falls off.

They've been getting grit, so I've been experimenting with treats. Cooked spaghetti is a big hit and really fun to watch as they run crazy trying to find a place to hide to eat their goodies. This morning they had shredded cheese and .....GOOD LORD.... they went nuts. lol

I want to post a ton of pictures. And I have them lol But I had to share the big news.

The girls went off on their own this weekend. Out to the big coop in the back yard!

I wasn't even planning on it. I thought they would be in for another couple of weeks, but I changed my mind when I started cleaning their brooder and the space around it. Holy mess! Our weather has been really nice and our coop is as safe as it's ever going to be, so I said why shouldn't they go?! They will be 5 weeks tomorrow and they are fully feathered.
So Saturday morning, I made them their happy little spa like space in the outside coop. Complete with a lower roost ( the big girl roost is quite high for them yet ) a bin for dust bathing, and a heat lamp in case it get's chilly at night. When I first put them in, they were slightly freaked out, but it didn't take them long to feel at home. They were lying around dust bathing in no time.

They stayed in most of the day on Saturday, but it was so nice in the afternoon, I opened the door to the run and all four of them eventually used the ramp to come out. They love being in the run. But we'll only have them out when we are out to supervise. Which was all weekend since it was "yard work weekend" for us.

I'll be leaving them in the coop during the week while I'm not home during the day. This morning they were yelling at me to let them out....but it's for their own safety.

It sounds like a good adventure for them! Welcome to your new home, little ladies. What did you put in the bin for their dust baths? You're a step ahead of me there, school me.
I'm ready for our trio to get outside, too. The dust from the pine shavings is driving me crazy. Our 3 had chick sitters over the weekend, and when we got back, they looked SO big!
Waiting for your photos.

Seriously! The mess was just getting to be too much for me and my ocd-ness. I had them in a wire crate, and even though I put cardboard half way up, they were still kicking litter out every little hole they could find. ugh! And of course as they grow, so does their poop. Pew! They are SO much happier outside though, honestly. I was planning on putting a "ladder" of some sort up against the big girl roost so they could use it easier....but the very first night, they got up there no problem. They look so happy all cuddled up there.

For the dust bath, I just used a large, somewhat shallow tupperware container and sprinkled a little DE ( food grade!) in with play sand. They were in heaven!

I hope to post pictures soon of their little adventure. Thanks for checking in!!
