-peeping sound-

Not too long ago a Red Tailed Hawk had breached the crappy netting and all total over the next couple of days, I lost 23 birds in one pen. I didn't run to get my camera because I was horrified at all of the bodies laying around in the pen. I had a Dr appointment and errands to do so I was away for quite awhile. I did check the birds before I left and they were ok. I was gone for a few hours and when I got back the birds were going crazy so I went to investigate and that is when I discovered the hawk and dead birds. There was a breach in the crappy netting where it probably got in through. I fixed it the spot. A few of the bodies, mostly pullets that were just about to start laying. I went through all of the pens looking for places that could be breached in the netting and fixed any spot where I saw a possibility, then the owl appeared one evening and went through the netting. What a surprise that was.

That's so sad!

I don't have too many problems with common predators such as raccoons and coyotes because I've been blessed with a very good little Sheltie that keeps them off, but she is aging a bit. We don't lose many to aerial predators either, but that's been mainly to dumb luck, I suspect. Our biggest problem has been the loss of eggs to those darn black snakes. Can't keep 'em out really, I just deal with them when I catch them in the act.

That’s horrible.. I’m sorry that happened to you. :( I’ll definitely be investing in high quality netting. I don’t want to risk having raptors breach my defenses..
