I volunteer with a Vet part time. Looks like you did a great job. watch for infection, heat, redness, swelling. starting antibotics was good thinking, a 10-day should help. Also keep the area clean & dry as much as possible.

let us know how she does.

good job!!!

She is doing pretty good. I have checked on her many times today and twice she was standing up. I haven't noticed her eating yet, but I have noticed her drinking

Thank you for giving me the knowledge of how to do it.

Oh you are more than welcome. I know if I can do this, anybody can.

Maybe the nail started it and then she picked on it. That could be. Other chickens would pick on it too if they saw it.

I am not sure that she could have gotten her head to it. The board was on top of her, but her head was sticking out according to my children. The other chickens weren't able to get to it either

Thankyou for the kind words. Goodluck with your hen.

Thankyou. I plan on cleaning the wound atleast twice aday. I will pay close attention to the things you mentioned. Right before I stiched her up, I used a syringe and squirted some of the bentadine solution inside the wound and I used cotton balls (all I had) to soak the fluid out. I keep the skin around the wound, wet with the betadine while I was stiching her up and after I was done I made sure she was dry and then I added the neosporin.

Thankyou everybody

Good morning all. I just wanted to update.....SHE MADE IT THROUGH THE NIGHT

I checked on her this morning and she has perfect color to her comb and wattles, bright eyed and very alert. I cleaned the wound and it looks awesome. No swelling, no redness, no "fever" and no draining. I am hopeful that all is going to be ok, but I am keeping a close watch too.

Well...I thought all was going well, but I found my girl dead this morning when I was getting the kids ready for school

The wound was healing great and there was no infection, that I could see.
I had noticed her a few times when I would take her outside to get some sunshine, liquid would come out of her mouth. So I come to the conclusion that her crop wasn't working or something to that affect. Everyday I felt the crop and it seemed mushy. I know she was not eating very much, but she was drinking. I have no idea what happened....or what the problem was. I did all I knew to do for this poor girl. Atleast I tried.....

Thanks everybody for your help
