Good morning-I have a few bumblefoot questions throughout this post so please bear with me:
A few months ago I adopted 4 pekin ducks from our local waterfowl rescue. I was assured they were healthy and vetted. Two weeks later, one duck started limping, losing feathers and stopped foraging. Bumblefoot. I discovered it too late and she didn’t make it.
I have had poultry here for 8 years and NEVER had a case of bumblefoot before. Now, a second duck has it.
Questions:
1) Is it possible that the ducks I brought in bright the staph infection to my property, so now it’s here to stay and a threat to all my other poultry?
2) I have been soaking my current duck’s feet in warm epsom salt daily. She is acting ok and eating, but the lumps are getting bigger. They are soft and forming that ominous black scab. Is there anything else I can do besides cut it out surgically?
3) After soaking, I spray her feet with Microcyn poultry spray, and today I picked off a scab with sanitized tweezers, then put mupirocin ointment on it.
HOW DO YOU BANDAGE A DUCK FOOT?
4) How infectious is this staph-are my family and other pets at high risk?
5) If she swims in the pond (kiddie pool), will she spread staph to the other ducks that way?
PLEASE NOTE-I do not have a vet available to help me, so y’all are my go-to. Thanks! (Pics below show both feet are affected)

Here is some info on meds to help.https://www.backyardchickens.com/threads/another-bumblefoot-post.1492463/#post-24896429
The bumble doesn't look too bad when you pull the scab off did anything come out or did you get anything out? Pus isn't liquid in ducks it's thick and yellowish. I've tried both using just drawing ointment and wrapping and opening the bumble and getting the infection out and meds and wrapping. To me getting the infection out has worked better for me. I also used antibiotics to help but when the bumble is walled off it's hard for the meds to work. Once the infection is out then the meds can go to work.
I have only had one duck with bumble but at least 4-5 of my hens have had it and I really hasn't caused any health issues with any of my other birds or my family and dog. Handwashing after treating is important.
Keep treating with soaks and wraps until the infection is out and the foot is healed up.
Bless you, for adopting these Pekins and giving them a good home.
