Pekin duck attacked (by chicken??)

I'd take her to the vet but am currently unemployed and as I live at home have to be sensitive to my parents sensibilities. For my dad no animal is worth more than its replacement value which is about 20 euro for a duck and a single vet visit without any meds tops that.

I am happy to keep her, and was thrilled with how well she seemed to be doing. But they aren't like dogs or people. I can't really tell if she is in pain even cleaning it the worst she did was squirm a bit. They don't vocalise. I am trying to balance probability of her surviving with pain she is feeling and floundering as I have no idea if this is survivable. My dad thinks for the ducks sake I should put it down but as I said he isn't particularly sentimental.

I have covered the open wound with iodine tincture and am keeping it clean. She is in the brooder under heat and she seems to enjoy a daily rummage in the garden.
I can understand exactly what your saying, but sounds to me like she is doing pretty good if she is enjoying a rummage in the garden daily. Your doing great, I'm sure there is some pain with this after all they are living an breathing. how do you feel things are going?

Today the exposed muscle had a yellow crust on top. I don't think it's infection I think that it is just fluid leaking and drying. I did try to clear a small patch but I was afraid that all I was doing was pulling off the natural healing scab. So I squirted it with salt water let it dry and dripped it with iodine. If it is healing then I think it is going well. But I also know thata sick duck can look healthy up until it keels over. I will upload pics tomorrow. I am keeping my fingers crossed for her.

I hope she makes it. A pic would be good. Lets hope it's healing.

Vet bills get expensive quick. Last time I took my dog to the vet after he hurt himself (cut on the neck), it was ~$550USD. I'd hate to think what it would cost with an emergency vet bill.

My condolences on being unemployed. In the current economic climate here, it is hard to get rehired if you have a college degree or are older like me. Even the lower wage hourly jobs aren't an option because they assume you will leave at the first opportunity ....

Lots of talk about a jobs recovery but, I can't see it from where I'm at.

What part of Europe are you from? I've spent a lot of time in Germany and the Netherlands. While on a college break, I traveled through a good deal of Western Europe and Hungary. I loved every minute of it. I still enjoy doing a Hostel once and while when I go back too.

Best wishes for you and you duck,
Sid

Hi!

Let's get you set up.

So, I would go to the Duck Forum https://www.backyardchickens.com/f/42/ducks

Under the title in red letters Ducks

There is a blue button Start a New Thread

Enter a title with a little information, like Pekin Duck Needs Help

Then in the text box, describe the situation.

Okay this is the hole in my ducks head their are 2 really with a weird thin strip of skin across it.

I swear that is one days waste and is already cleaned out she is a messy girl.

I don't know how that's going to close though.

EDIT the yellow staining is from the iodine not discharge!

I'm in Ireland, its hard to know if things are better or not it is better for some worse for others. It doesn't help that I haven't finished my degree. Had to leave due to ill health and it is expensive to go back. A local meat packing plant is hiring so fingers crossed that they pick my cv out of the pile.

It doesn't look too bad ,doesn't look infected? How is she acting? eating good? using iodine it should be watered down to look like weak tea. but keep using it or if you can get something called Blue Kote, it has gentian violet in it it is great for healing or another product called Veterycin you might be able to order on line it is another great product that is good for wounds and infections. But even using some warm salty water to wash out the wound then using iodine after should help heal and the wound will heal from the inside out the last thing you will see is the skin growing over top then feathers. If they heal like us humans. Looks like that's exactly what it's doing.
