Pekin Duck Club!

In that pic he doesn't look 6 weeks maybe 3-4  needs to be at temps at around 70* with out chilling breezes.  If mine he'd be inside.poor thing outside by himself would be terrifying since they are flock animals.   Your not keeping him in water continually are you.

Good homes mean secure housing with secure fencing maybe someone who already has ducklings or ducks and has experience in caring for one.  Bless it's heart it's been through so much already getting the best forever home is a must.

Are these that have offered members of BYC?@kelly md

Ok. We had the other plan to move him into the garage for the night. It's warmer than our house which is set at 72. He's been lavished with attention today, so no worries. I am a little concerned about him becoming too attached to us since we can't be his forever home. Our bird dog Jake has been acting like a wild man with the smell on us. I'll find out about the BYC membership. One lady lives on a farm with a pond and had a duck for years until he passed. Another has chickens but no ducks. And I reached out the ag kids at the local high school

2 questions: 1)the lady at tractor supply estimated the duckling at 6 weeks. By my calculations, he can probably tolerate the outdoors in Texas at night since is about 70ish? We have him in an extra large kennel to keep him safe from our dogs and predators.
2)I've had a couple of offers from people to take him. What should I be looking for in a good home for him?

I think that little guy is only about 3 weeks old...

. Also, I've read that they can carry salmonella? Any other precautions other than good hand washing?
Other than successfully hatching and releasing 4 wild turkey eggs after the mother was killed, I'm a total poultry/ fowl novice with a good heart for animals and human patients. Advice is greatly appreciated and y'all seem to be the only reliable source I can find on the internet

I've had poultry since 2004 ducks chickens and geese and never had salmonella so yes good hand washing is a must but don't be over concerned.

Go to the Texas thread and reach out there too. He really needs to be with other ducks but not at a place where you found him.

He couldn't have walked up to a better person I don't think. Your a hero to us on BYC!

If these folks who had reached out to you would get another duck or 2 to go with this lil one then I'd say you have your pick because they don't do well on their own being flock animals they really need a flock which can be 2 and up.

Awesome about the turkey's too.
