Will Muscovies and Pekins even hang around each other? I know they aren't related (Pekins descended from Mallards, Musky's don't). I wouldn't mind having the mixes because I could use/sell them for meat (when I get the courage to kill such a cute animal). I just don't want there to be chaos if I have a breeding pair of Muscovies and a few Pekins running around.
While ours don't mix, the Scovies keep to themselves. I'm sure it varies from flock to flock and bird to bird.My scovies follow my pekin hen all over the place! So you shouldn't have chaos.

Are we talking "free range" in an enclosure or "free range" as in they roam all over kingdom come? Ours have a 40x90 enclosure and they roam around. Four of them will go back to the nesting boxes, 1 wants to lay in holes she digs (she switches between 2 different holes) and 1 will drop it where ever she is...pool, nest box, ramp of the coop, yard, just where ever. So again it depends on the duck.Sweet! Thanks everyone! I have a bit of room even if they don't like each other, so hopefully there wouldn't be a problem. Too bad my ducks now aren't smart enough to find the pond that's only about 50 feet away from them.
Is it about impossible to have duck eggs if you let them free range, or will they come back to nesting boxes to lay eggs?
Okay, last question that I kind of want opinions on. Someone on Craigslist is either selling Breeding pairs of Muscovies for $25 or the ducklings for $4ea. I'm a bit of a tight wad...what should I do? Ducklings are straight run so I might run the risk of getting all of one thing, of course.
Welcome to duck life! That is totally normal. You can use an old trick of cutting a hole in a milk jug for them to drink if you dont want them to swim. But all this is normal. Supervise swimming sessions tho. They dont have their protective feathers and can drown, or get tired and drown. Good luck with the little cuties!I got my 2 pekin ducklings yesterday. They are 5 days old today. 1 is wanting to swim in the water bowl and they are sleeping in the food bowl. Any ideas on how to stop this or is this normal?
