Pekin Duck Club!

@Amiga well I use the pine shavings and yes they do have food and water 24/7..

It's also weird because I have two babies that sleep in the same place and everything, her feet are perfectly fine ( they're one color).

squealing at the cuteness of this-
Periscope up!!
They would periodically stand up real tall and stare out the front window and chatter their beaks in excitement! Almost as if to say "we are flying!! We are really flying!"
I have to put more blankets down under them to boost them up a little bit so that they can see easier. :D
They look so happy!!!!!!!!!!!

I want to cuddle them both!
They are happy boys. Everything is "super great" to them.

Hello! My soon to be ex husband surprised me with a Pekin for Valentines. I had been asking for a duck pretty much for the entire 7 years we were together, why he decided just months before our divorce is beyond me. We raised chickens when we lived out in the country - bard rock, road island reds, crested polish, fancy foots, I can't even remember all the different breeds we had (I miss my chickens) but anyways about 2 weeks ago now poor Rosie was attacked (I assume) by something and was found in the back yard just laying on the ground. She's able to hop on one foot but the left leg seemed broken so I followed google advice and local farmers advice of resetting and splinting it (The injury and repair both happened the same day) She's eating, seems to sleep okay, doesn't seem to be in any pain but cannot put any weight on that left leg or even fully extend it. I'm afraid I'm going to lose my sweet Rosie.

I'm open to any and all advice. I just want her well again. She's been such a sweet duck, she follows me around the yard and likes to stand on the front porch and peck at the door - taunting the cats I think or just wanting to be let back in. Currently I've made a lil house for her out of a large tote, i keep it lined with a soft towel and some cedar shavings, she has fresh water and I change out her box at least once every two days if not more often depending on cleanliness.

Before she broke her leg I was allowing her to swim in the tub - as seen in my avatar - but I've been afraid to do so until she's healed which I have no idea how long it takes. I broke my arm in 04 in a bad car accident and it took 6-8 weeks for it to heal. IDK in duck terms. I don't want to have to put her down because I have no idea how to process a duck - nor would I really want to. Any help would be appreciated.....Take care fellow Pekin owners. Night night.

Oh bless you and your sweet little Pekin and although I cannot offer any advice I suggest you look in the other duck forums for Amiga and Miss Lydia and LadyHawkeAvery. All these women are extremely experienced and knowledgeable about ducks. Best of luck and keep us updated.

Pekins are heavy ducks, and so their legs take a lot of strain, especially when they are young and growing fast as their bodies can become too heavy too quickly for their growing leg bones to handle. In a weight bearing limb of a non flying bird, splinting rarely provides adequate repair. The preferred method is surgery with internal fixation, so that the bone can heal in an anatomically correct position. My suggestion would be to find a reputable avian veterinarian in your area and have them get some X-rays of Rosie to determine the extent of her injury and give you treatment options. Until then you are doing the right thing by keeping her resting and comfortable in her tote! She sounds very special, keep everyone posted on her progress!!!

I read the jumbo pekins have an especially tough time bearing weight. Do you think she might be a jumbo? She's very lucky to have you for a friend.

Pekindiaries your boys are so cute I would never think of taking them for a drive.
Krispy85.. That must be so scary. I'm sorry I have no advice just know how worried I'd be if it was one of mine

. It would make me feel sick to have to cull them. They're so affectionate and trusting.

So, I was looking online and found a duck harness, if I were to buy it, can I walk my Pekin duck at the park then? Or is it like a yard only thing?

I would have some fun walking my little nice female one at the park if so, lol!
