Pekin Duck Club!

Lefty the duck.

Hi everyone! Nibbles has some spots on his bill I'm worried about. Does anyone know what this is? I thought it was just where he'd banged it on something but more have appeared.
Is his feet okay? Do they look puffy or have an unusual lump on them?

Quick question, what is the LATEST yall have heard for a Pekin to start laying?

We got ours two weeks ago from a couple, they said they got them in February but couldn't remember the exact day or how old they were, "they were real little". They were ordered.
So say they got them the very last day of Feb and they we're (doubtfully) a day old that would put them at 26 weeks at the absolute youngest...
They were on layer feed when we got them. Could they still be adjusting & that's preventing them from starting?

If they were ordered, they likely weren't more than 3 days old when they received them. Ducks can start laying later as it gets later in the year if you're in the US. (I assume GA means Georgia in the US)

Did the people you got them from say whether either of them had ever laid before? It's very common for ducks to stop laying for a while when their routine is disrupted, and moving is about as big a disruption as they can have other than a predator attack.

If they've never laid before, are you sure they're female?

Yes Georgia, US. They said they had not laid before and they specifically ordered two females...so I would assume and hope they are!
They have started keeping my younger female rouen mix away from my drake some, but otherwise they are all happy and get along well... so I was hoping that was a sign, but then I realized how old they were and just thought I'd ask.

I'm happy to report Nibbles' bill is turning nice and orange! It's stopped peeling and the feed change has also perked him up some :) I'm going to get him some lady friends on the 4th but they're still young so they won't be in with him right away. I've got a pen set up next to his area so they can see each other and hopefully they'll be friends by the time they're ready to go into the big pen.

Can you tell for sure by their quacks that they're females? Chances are pretty good they are if you also have a drake. If one or both of the Pekins were male, your existing one would probably have been going after them already.

Great to hear! What did you end up changing about the feed/treats?
