Pekin Duck Club!

Hi. I would like to be added to your Pekin Duck Club. I have four ducklings that are about 4 1/2 weeks old and don't know what I am doing. Mostly, we are just learning as we go so I could use some support and encouragement. We plan to build a pen this weekend b/c hopefully the evening temperatures will be warm enough that I can let them stay outside. We have been keeping them in their cage on our back deck during the day and bringing them in at night (a hassle). I love my duckies but was not prepared for how to care for them. I just didn't realize that they would need so much protection from cold and predators. We have water in our backyard from an inlet and my hope is that one day they will come and go. Any suggestions on building the pen? We have a fenced in yard but I have seen foxes in my neighbors yard. What should I use for them to sleep in? Sorry for so many questions.

I see one of your girls has a curled up tail with pin feathers lacing the top.  Are you sure they are girls?  I'm dying to find out what mine are.  Do you know at what age can you tell what you have?  one of my (girls?) doesn't have the lacey feathers at the end.  But it does curl up a bit.  But that one acts so much like a girl!

The one your talking about - QUACKS her sisters don't yet but she def does ... And they all hold their bottoms up like that sometimes then they relax it - esp when they are running or get scared from a noise lol
The DRAKE feather is just that .. feathers . On the very top of the back of drakes .. What your seeing on my girl is her actual bottom w her dense downy stuff about to feather out . Just all tensed up . I purchased them Pre-sexed leg banded and all . And like I said she quacks lol LOUDLY lol honk quack honk honk quack quack quack quack x10 haha it's cute

And the first sign of sex differences is voice - females quack. Males have a raspy quieter voice . Next at about a couple months or so the drake feather should be present if I understand it right. . My girl that quacks is almost 4 weeks her sisters don't really yet but the one that does is the leader of their lil quack pack so it's kinda fitting she's the first to make her voice heard lol

the same duck relaxed a bit ;)

When we built their house we put a small ramp going up to the door and the ducks will not use it. Every night we go out and pick up the ducks and stick them in their house. They have been in their pen now for 2 1/2 weeks. Will they eventually go in on their own??

Hello. I am a brand new Pekin owner. I have two two week, almost three week old Pekin babies. I also have 2 Khaki Campbells the same age. So far..I am in love. They grow so fast though!!! My kids keep changing the duck names, which is fine, until we can tell their sex, then names will have to stay:) The Pekins make me laugh whenever I go in to bring them a container to "swim" in or bring them treats (watermelon, tomato, broccoli stems and peices...all finely chopped, of course). I am looking forward to watching them grow up and making them a nice area outside:)

Hi Carmengirl

You are right about them growing. Every time I look at them they have changed, and I check on them several times a day. LOL I am new to ducks and chicks. I have two Pekin and 1 Rouen. When I separate them to carry them to the bath, they make the worst noise ever.

Hello to our new members and our current members. I have been dealing with medical issues and have been unable to make a new members list. I am working on that as we speak. After posting if you can please check that your name is there. You are also welcome to contact me by PM with your Pekin's names as I would like to add them to the list. Thanks everyone!
