Pekin Duck Club!

Stupid question: how tall do pekins get? Mine are only 3 weeks old now but in the process of building a duck house now and would like to know how tall to make the doors and high high up I can attach the tray feeder for them to take some of the mess out of it. Lol. Any helping pointers?

Hello everyone!

I am a preschool teacher and BRAND NEW to Pekin Ducks (or any ducks for that matter!) I incubated 3 Pekin Duck eggs at school, 2 survived and now it seems I may be keeping them as pets! I was going to give them to a teacher who raises ducks, but decided I may want them for my family after all. My husband LOVES them! I am trying to find all the information I possibly can to be a good pet owner and make sure I am doing the best I possibly can for these little babies. I came to this site and LOVE it! Thank you for letting me join! Here are my 9 day old babies, Pippi and Tippi...

So my crested pekin has an official name..

Cosette

Isn't that just an exquisite name for such a royal bird?

Pretty name...

so I have a question.....and Im not sure if this is the right forum or not.......but I will put it out there.......Im interested in reducing my flock and wanted to know if size wise it was better to wait a yr or to reduce the flock at 6 months......?

I seem to think that this thread is more leaning towards pekin ducks as pets......am i correct?
We process excess roos and meaties but our ducks are our pets - I don't even like duck so I haven't even checked into when to process one. You might find out some good information on the Meat Birds forum though - hope that helps!

Awwww.... congrats! I love seeing new babies! Here's some basics on duckling care...

1. Water deep enough for them to dunk their heads into (they need to be able to clear their nostrils and wash their eyes)
*watch them when they are little though
2. Duck feed or chick starter (unmedicated is best)
3. Niacin (not "flush-free", "time-release", or "slow-release") 100-125mg per gallon of water for the first 10-12 weeks
4. Warmth - but not as much or as long as chicks - just make sure they can get out of the heat if they want
5. Swim water - when they are little, just a short swim under supervision and back under the warmth to dry so they don't get chilled
*they are sooo much fun to watch swim!

Have fun and post all the pics you want - we will all love to watch them grow up!

Lost Sam-I-Am this morning to a stray dog. He was trying to be brave and save the chickens. Everyone else is ok but he was my favorite. I hope the dog doesn't come back for the chickens though. Will have to beef up the security.

Mudholes are so fun - I love when they look up at you and it's all dripping down from their faces, mouth, etc. - same with watermelon. LOL

Sorry to hear of your loss, Jon. That is my one biggest fear... I have 4 Jumbo Pekins and 6 Rouens (lost 2 of my Pekins when I took a vacation, and my DIL took care of them, but I'm replacing them at the end of this month). We have dogs that run off-leash here, in a small rural town, and I'm fearful that they'll somehow get into the ducks' pen. I've taken all precautions, but still... nagging fear.
