Yep... she wants to build up her clutch, and doesn't want you taking her eggs.I have a female pekin who has had a nest for months!!! Whenever I clean the coop I leave her nest. We recently added 4 ducklings and chickens about 3 weeks ago. Today when I entered the coop she hissed at me. My husband and I both noticed that this is a first. Also this morning she was sitting on the nest and did not jump up to go outside. As of now there is only 1 egg. Do you think the hissing is a sign that she is getting ready to become broody?
I think it was great. You have some pretty duckies there. Man, I wish we had a pond for our girls. They would go crazy over it.I cry easy, so please don't boo my first attempt at making a duck video........I'll get better....(probably not).![]()
from a few days ago..,,
edited: looks like the video is cut off???...and quality sucks....dang, (fail)...lol.
Thanks! I've been taking them to that pond a time or two a day for quite some time now. I thought I would never be able to get them out of it, but that isn't the case. They have a blast, but are WAY more comfortable in their pen. I sneak off and leave them down there and soon after, here they come, waddlin' up the hill....I think it was great. Your female actually retains semen from the male for 2-3 weeks, so if she's laying an egg a day, you will find that they are likely fertile, too. Let her have her eggs, and build up her clutch Any that don't hatch at the end of the incubation, which will likely be towards the end of the time she builds it up, and she'll stop laying for a while while she is broody. Let nature take her course.Ok well here's another question. You will maybe think I am crazy. I had to get rid of her mate as if this afternoonI was so sad to do it but he had become EXTREMELY aggressive and despite my attempts to keep him separated from the others he was still finding ways to attack the yougins. If anything only the one egg in the nest would be fertile.![]()
She seems to already be adjusting but will it be more heart breaking to let her attempt to brood a nest? I thinking it won't hurt and I will candle it in 3-5 days.
