Hi Pekin Duck Club Members! I have two Pekins I rescued. One drake, one duck. Joe & Vera we call them. My avatar is of these wonderful pair. They have quite the back story, too. Joe went up against a bobcat to protect Vera. I wanted to plant things all around their pen that will be edible for them. I've been all over the site and there's not really a list of good duck-food type plants. I'm aware of what NOT to plant; but, am looking for other things (besides duck weed). Suggestions?

Would you help a newb out & list those items on the "NOT-y" list? Ha ha. I let mine free range around the "yard" (new house with NO landscaping - yet) but their house is on the edge of 3 acres of woods/forest.
 
Foxglove, Ferns, anything in the nightshade family (tomatoes, et al.), Potato plants, lily of the valley, Eggplant. These are the plants that grow on my property, but are far away from where my Pekins live. There are others, like Avocado, Coffee Plants, and Cacao plants -- none of which grow by me. When I knew I was going to be rescuing Vera & Joe, I did a lot of research. I also went to our local farm grange and talked with a local duck expert there. They were very helpful to let me know about what plants in my region I needed to be concerned with....they, haven't, however, been very helpful in giving me ideas about what plants TO PLANT.
 
Alright now, everyone is making me miss those ducks and now Tractor Supply is all out. I just got back. We went to the Galax store and they were out and we went to the Mt Airy store and THEY were out also. It is warmer and I could keep them in the shred until I have things set hp for them but no ducks anywheres. Last year when I got them and kept them in the bathroom with heat lamps it was the end of March and the first of April. It just was roo cold for them to be out til my husband brought home the hutch and yard and a doggie kennel from Tractor Supply.

my pekin has a black dot ofits head now.. but the rest of its body is turning white. Will the black dot stay or what? And why is it there? I checked because iI didnt know if it was mud but I put it in the pool and it was still there so I checked it and it is its head feathers.

We had one Pekin drake, I don't know how old he was, but he'd just gotten his drake feather. As awesome as he was, we had to re-home him...we wanted an all female/all chicken flock, and so we sold our Pekin & his harem of Crested to a woman in San Antonio. Check the Texas forum and see if anyone there is interested. Good Luck!

I recently adopted this little Pekin. Any guesses on age? His prior owner thought he was 3 - 4 weeks and that he was a boy based off her attempt to vent sex him. My Welsh Harlequins in the pictures with him are 9 weeks old. He was a Tractor Supply duckling.
