Pekin Duck Club!

Hi every one, I'm hoping someone can help. My Pekin has this spot above her beak and I'm not sure what it is, I've looked at it closely and it's really squishy. She will scratch at it also. It looks like an infection but I'm not sure.

Ps I'm not hurting her, she just wouldn't stay still.

It does look like it could be infected.

A vet is best, if you can do that.

In the meantime, I would drop just two drops of hydrogen peroxide on the spot. If it foams, it is a bacterial infection. If it does not, it may be a fungal infection.

In any case, I would get her into a lukewarm tub of water and let her bathe (no soap) for 20 minutes or so, get nice and clean (I know, with ducks it doesn't last long sometimes). Then I would rinse the spot gently with saline solution.

If it is a bacterial infection, I would dab some antibacterial ointment on the spot.

The infection could be coming from inside her mouth - perhaps she cut the roof of her mouth (I know there are different terms for duck bills, but bear with me here). If that is the case, there may be an infection all the way through from the roof of her mouth to the top of her bill and in that case I would get some oral antibiotics started.

Vets are best for deciding the optimum antibiotic. Some bacteria are not affected by some antibiotics. Duramycin10 might work, but again, if no sensitivity test is done, we are flying in the dark.

If it is not bacterial, it is likely fungal, and an anti fungal medicine is needed. I am not sure of the best anti fungal to use for a duck - again, a vet would know better. But you can look around, and perhaps someone here who is more of a vet or vet-tech would have some specific ideas. Coconut oil is said to be anti fungal, and it is very gentle, and okay to use with ducks in small amounts, based on my limited experience (and I always say, anyone can be allergic to anything, always start with a tiny amount and watch carefully).

oh, she's cute. I hope you can get her issue resolved.

I have what I believe to be a drake, pekin. Wiggles
has the drake curl. My question is, why are my male runner/khaki Campbell's mounting him in the pool. I have a female Rouen and she should be laying sometime this month I hope. Just wondering why my pekin is being mounted by my other two.

Most likely dominance play. Or not enough females available... Lol

Ste
Where in NY are you? If you are close to where I am in upstate NY I would be more than happy to take him. I'm sure my ladies wouldn't mind a new man, and he would be great for me to use as an unrelated breeder. We have a drake from a similar situation who has been a wonderful addition to our flock.
We are about 40 miles West of Albany.
I'm in Staten Island. Can I see pictures of your land and ducks?!
