I want to join the club. I've been reading and learning for the past 28 days. Now I have 5 sweet yellow pekin babies in my brooder. Not a good hatch rate (16 eggs in lockdown) but my first attempt at hatching ducks. One pipped on the wrong end and needed help. I waited 24hrs and she was not progressing. When she did emerge her foot was all crumpled and looked like it was deformed. I tried to strech it flat and make sure nothing was damaged. Today she has 2 flat webbed feet and moving around the brooder. They have gamebird starter crumbles and brewers yeast. I also put nutri drench in the water. When can they go for their first swim? Thanks for the help.

They are adorable! They can swim right off but in the wild they get oil from their mom to keep them waterproof, before they can do that themselves you have to swim them in shallow water and watch them, they can drown. Also don't swim them too much or too long. Once they start getting tail feathers (2-3weeks) they can swim longer, you'll see water beads off of them. Just make sure their swims are short and supervised while they are little. And enjoy them, they grow up fast! I think mine went from a cute little yellow duckling to a big white duck overnight lol

That baby looks so tiny in my husbands hand! He loves all our birds and I find him holding and baby talking to them and our 3 goslings. Big bad truckdriver!

Aw, my husband does the same thing! He LOVES our ducklings!

I think there's some sort of magical fairy dust inside peas.. I've started feeding my ducks a few peas from my hands once or twice a day, and now they LOVE me! Haha! Merry especially will now come running when he sees me, and Pippin will reluctantly follow. They definitely each have their own personality. Merry is the lovey one (he's my avatar photo) and Pippin is adventurous in exploring, but more shy with people.

I just became mom to 2 Pekins & 2 Rouens. They were hatched on 4/22. I can't even concentrate at work. All I want to do is be with or at least read about ducks. Thanks all for sharing pics of your adorable duck-children. I haven't yet taken the time to figure out how to get pics from my phone onto my computer so I can share here. (Yes, I'm technologically challenged.) I wonder if the open bills is partly due to excitement. Mine do it, too. Most often just when I first come to greet them.
