Pekin Duck Club!

They're in a secure place to sleep, the duck house (it use to be a wooden shed but we renovated it for the ducks) has only female ducks in it, the males have already been separated in their own pen. It's the other females that are the problem. I took the ducklings after finding the two I left out there dead, one looked squished.I notice when the mother is off the nest for any reason they run right in there. I just went out there and told them they shouldn't be a problem, I don't think they agree with you. It's not a big deal to take the ducklings away, the mother doesn't seem to care and they wouldn't even have known her had I incubated. The chicks are safely in a brooder where I know nothing will happen to them. I don't think I had a reason for calling them chicks, I didn't realize we were playing semantics. I figured you guys would get it.
I never wanted them to breed. It's not our intention to bring any more ducks into the world. They're done, I'd have the males neutered if I could. It was accidental, it's our first time owning ducks, they were even able to breed. I didn't know one of the "girls" was a him. They have to stay separated, I'm never doing this again.

My dear, if you feel offended, it's not by me. I asked for clarification. If you don't want to answer, don't. I could flag your post if you want to flare up again.

Please don't be ashamed at breeding. You had a beautiful chances. Not let one bad apple spoil it for you. When your ready to bread again you will. It may be many years down the road for you.but don't ever say never. Can you separate the mother baby's to another area. By themselves . With wire fencing dividing the other girls away from the nest.and still give food and water. And maybe tie a tarp or other covering on top to protect them. Deer netting or something.i understand it was a accident . But let's look at helping baby's now.

400
example- tarp you can get 10.00 at target.

I think it's cool that it happened without you even knowing it! That's nature for you! I laughed when you said "I didn't know one of the "girls" was a him!" I also wondered about the "chicks" but I finally got it. I'm a little slow! LOL

Keep up the good work, I understand never doing this again...it's a LOT of work! And I only had 5 to worry about!!!

example - I know chickens but you can use cage idea and tarp for cage idea to help mom and baby.
I don't know why not. I would be concerned about the room. I went to a furniture store and got a dresser box for mine. It worked beautifully! They never outgrew it! When they were finally big enough to be crowded they were big enough to go outside! Yippee!!

Thank you for responding. In my haste I may have miscommunicated. There's nothing wrong, I was just sharing and bragging a little bit. :) The ducklings are safe in their brooder. My big ducks are free during the day but come to the back door at exactly five thirty every night for supplements and bed down. They're in a very secure aviary we repurposed from an old wooden shed. It has chicken wire all the way around, it's even buried cause I was nervous about racoons. The hard sides are removable, it gets quite stuffy but it's Florida and we have all kinds of weather. The two drakes have a separate enclosure and we used our old hurricane shutters to make them a place to sleep at night. They can sleep next to each other but are separated by the chicken wire. They are all very safe, we never lost even one until I found the two ducklings who'd passed.
Also, thank you for the ideas. I'm going to need something bigger as the ducklings grow.
So you don't think I'm rude, I probably won't log back into this Web site. I only signed up because one of the ducklings was having a hard time and I didn't know what else to do. No one helped and the situation resolved itself, the duckling's back up and running. :)
Thanks again for the ideas, your chickens are amazing. I had a bunch of Rhode Island Reds when I lived in New York, they're a lot of fun. Take care!

Ma'am, lol, I wish you could have seen the look on my face as I candled the eggs and they were, every single one of them, furtile. I was horrified/excited/scared. I went right out and picked up every single duck and listened. Sure enough, when he quacked I knew what I'd done. He had no turned up tail feather, I thought for sure he was a girl.
Lesson learned, it's up to eight ducklings now. She had another in the nest when she came to be put to bed. <3

These are my new chicks!! There's seven so far.
I've had my pekin's for about a year. They were fully grown when I got them but not breeding age. I rescued them from a trailer park, the man who bought them as ducklings got them for his daughter and then had a stroke. With no one to care for them the neighbors contacted me and I was happy for the challange. I homeschool so it's an amazing experience for the kids.
I separated them when I figured out they weren't all girls but one of my males didn't have the flipped tail feather so he spent a bit of time with the girls. I thought her quack sounded funny, lol. One of the ladies got all...grouchy one afternoon and took to nesting. I checked her nest and she had a bunch of eggs, I collected them all and candled. They all had veins! I panicked, put them all back and ran to the feed store. They talked me down.
I decided to take the chicks away as soon as they're fluffed because of the other ducks and that I live in Florida, there are so many predatory birds we got nervous.
They're doing great!! Growing so much, chirping and running and swimming. They're really friendly, they all want to sit in your lap. I'm proud of myslef.
