One of my female Pekin ducks (approx. 4 months old) has had runny/wet looking eyes for the past 3 to 4 weeks. She also frequently has foamy bubbles in her eyes. Is this a sinus or respiratory infection?

I have been giving her Duramycin-10 (1 tsp per gallon) in her water for about 7 days and haven't seen much improvement. She doesn't seem to eat or drink as much as the other duck.

We do not have a vet in the area that will treat ducks and I could really use some advise! Below is a picture of her....

I just want her to get better, but don't know what to do for her!

does she have a bucket of water deep enough for her to wash her face? very important, do you have oxine ah? http://www.shagbarkbantams.com/oxine.htm have you tried washing her eyes out with some warm salt water? also does she have discharge coming out of her nares. Tylan is the choice for upper respiratory infection. but unless she is showing symptoms i wouldn't treat her with antibiotics. if you have a vet that will treat her it might be a good idea to go that route. There is also a product called Veterycin comes in a spray, I buy it at TSC, is great for infections wounds etc and can be sprayed on the face and in the eyes. Please let us know how she is doing.

Yes she always has access to deep enough water to wash her face in. I have not tried washing out her eyes with warm salt water....do you just literally mis salt and water together and then just basically pour it over her eyes?

I don't really see anything coming from her nose holes.

Do you think I should buy some of the oxine ah and treat her with that?

Should I stop the antibiotics?

If she has no discharge from her nose holes and her breathing is fine, not raspy or bubbly sounding, then it may be an eye infection rather than respiratory. For that I'd try antibiotic eye drops - the kind you give kids for conjunctivitis. Give a couple of drops in each eye a few times a day. I've used Chlorsig but I don't know if it's the same thing in the US. You get it at a pharmacy.

How clean is the surface your ducks live on? Often that can be the origin of eye infections. Some ducks are more sensitive to these things than others. I had a problem with it with two ducks who were on a sand surface so I changed to deep litter, turned daily and have had no problems since.

I think her breathing is okay for the most part. It seemed like I could hear both ducks breathing a few weeks ago...seemed kind of congested and slightly raspy sounding. I don't really hear anything now. It is primarily her eye being wet and runny constantly. I will try the Veterycin spray and eye drops.

The ducks recently (a couple of weeks ago) moved into a new pen. The floor right now is grass, but as the grass starts dying, we are planning on sand/pea gravel for the floor. What exactly is deep litter method? Would that be better for keeping the pen clean and keeping flies away?

I use deep litter too, here is some info it's on using deep litter for chickens but same with ducks too, https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/...e-easiest-way-to-deal-with-chicken-litter-dlm I turn my bedding over daily and spray with Oxine ah. never have oder problems either. you can get teramycin eye ointment or drops at most feed stores. I also mist my flock with Oxine ah monthly.

What happened with your duck, my duck has a wet eye and I was wondering what you ended up doing and what the results were.

Thanks

Do you have any Veterycin spray? great stuff and safe to use in the eyes. also some ACV in the water bucket so the duck can wash out it's eyes, great tonic for them also. If you don't see improvement got to feed store and by some Terramycin Eye ointment. and use it. You can buy Veterycin at Tractor Supply. ACV 1-2 Tab to 1gal on water. Are you noticing any other symptoms? and

Hello Miss Lydia,

All we have noticed has been the eye, I see some redness in it. I purchased the Vetericyn and sprayed some in his eye. Hope that will help. I will be updating his condition. Thank you very much for the help.

Be sure to add the Apple Cider vinegar to the water too. and spray the eye one more time when putting up for the night so the duck isn't washing it out. Hope you see improvement fast. I have an older hen that will get bubbles in her eyes off and on I can spray the Vetericyn in and next day it's cleared up. Let us know how your duck is doing. Thanks
