Hey guys! We found one of our male pekin ducks today outside and I noticed this black spot on the back of his body. When my husband picked him up and I was able to pull feathers back, he has a huge sore that's black and can see some infected skin. I don't want the poor guy to suffer, what's the best way to treat it? We don't have a wildlife vet here so I can't take it anywhere. Please help my guy!

Pictures would be good. My instinct is to advise isolation somewhere he can't get the wound dirty. Clip any dirty feathers out of the way, clear the wound of any dirt/debris/dead skin. You may have to hold a warm compress on it for a while if the edges have dried out. That will make it easier to clean and less painful for the boy. Once you are clean down to raw, healthy skin, apply a THIN layer of antibiotic ointment over the wound and around it on the normal skin.

Like I said, pictures would help. But this is my SOP for these types of injuries.

Oh my gosh, so sorry! For some reason, I wasn't getting any alerts! Please see attached the picture. It was the best I could do as he wouldn't let me really touch the area.

It doesn't look like it goes deep in the picture but I could pull the feathers back towards the top and it kept going. Again he didn't like me pulling on it and I only had one hand - the other had my phone taking the picture!

Was real well and @casportpony would say pluck or trim all feathers away from the wound there is Veterycin spray for wounds and infections . Neosporin triple antibiotic but if your where the flies are coming out you will want to keep him away from them they will lay eggs in that and maggots will be next and that isn’t something you want to deal with.

Hard for me to see what’s going on. What have you done so far? Any ideas what did this?
No idea how it happened or how long it's been there, he happened to be standing at the right angle for me to realize it wasn't mud on him, we have had an ENORMOUS amount of rain here in MS and everything is so muddy

And I haven't done anything so far, I wasn't sure what to do and just found it yesterday so was checking on here to see what's best! I tried wiping it down but he wasn't cooperating :)
