Pekin duckling panting

I have the same issue with my girl, a Peking as well. She is hot natured already so only use the lamp after a bath. Constantly letting her clean her face & nares, but she goes through her panting stage anywhere from 4-10times a day, with her heart racing. I dont like leaving her because of this. I give her a bowl of cool water to sip & that seems to help, but only for so long. I've been using puppy pads & padding because everything else had some dust or they ate. I'm at a loss here. She eats & drinks fine. She has started to wall a bit less than her sister (a welsh) tho, same age but she's twice her size. We give the Niacin, vitamins, etc. Our vet suggested trying a couple days without the Niacin to see if that helps (its known in people to make them hot & flush so just trying it out). The room she's in is actually pretty cool because of this. I am at a loss, I am so in love with these 2 girls & I'm hoping we can figure it out ASAP. I'll be following this thread. I do notice tho, it's mostly the pekins. I'm thinking their body weight might contribute some. I know my girl, Mabel, doesn't run around & walk as much as she did before. We go back to our vet this week & I'll let you know what she says. Will be hoping & praying for your duckies as well.

Hi there!

How old are your ducklings? Can you post a video of them when they breathe like this? (You have to upload the video to YouTube or vinmo, then copy and past the link in your reply)
Hi, is this to me? (DavisDucks?) New on this site and wasnt sure if this is a reply to just me or someone else on the thread.... thanks, good you're having a great day!!

Yep this is for you. If you’ll notice this thread was started in 2014. Onaharley has several Pekins. What is the temperature where they are at? Mine start panting around 70F.

Ohhhhh, ok sorry. I missed that.
Ok, so I have 2 ducklings. 1 is a Welsh, 1 is a pekin. Got them both the same day & were told they were just 2 days old, so they are now 2 1/2 weeks old. The temp in their room is 68-70degrees, approx. through the day, then drops a little at night (which I turn room heater on when or before it gets too cold.) It Always feels cold when I walk in. I guess the 68-70 degree temp is too high then? From all the research I did, it told me to start higher, close to 90, and slowly drop within certain periods of time. Now my Pekin (Mable) is literally twice the size of my Welsh (Emmy) so I guess I didnt want to get Emmy cold while making sure Mable wasnt too hot. But Im sure we'll find a happy medium somewhere ! I just worry about her Constant heart racing & panting.

Aww bless sounds like you have them tucked in that’s so sweet. Just hoping Emmy isn’t too cold and Mable isn’t too hot hard to make it perfect for both. Hopefully Mable will as she grows and temps moderate will acclimate better and Little Emmy will be able to handle the cooler temps .
