Pekin Ducks Foot turned black and now is missing peices help.

My apologies for dredging up an old thread but just wanted to know what happened to your duck as we have recently purchased two Muscovy ducks and in the last couple of days one has developed a sore foot which has developed into a black spot similar to your second pic. Foot no longer seems sore but I'm worried, especially since another very small black spot has appeared on other foot. Bathing feet in Epsom and betadine separately, applying antiseptic cream and have started him on cephalexin orally today. (All that I could get my hands on in Australia without a vet visit).

Black spot started out as pale spot that was swollen and red around. Noticed today that his mate now has similar pale spot and very slight swelling so have started treating her too.

My first two thoughts - are there stinging insects or plants in the area?

What's your weather like? I doubt it, but is there extreme cold? Frostbite can start out that way and lead to necrotic (dead) tissue.

Thanks for the reply. Definitely no risk of frostbite here in Australia right now. We have just started Autumn and still have very hot days and nights. No obvious stinging plants or insects that I can think of, and given that his mate is showing signs of similar problem I think is must be an infection. Treatment seems to have stopped further spread, so hopefully it's working, but would really like to know what it is, how they got it and what's the prognosis. They seem happy and healthy otherwise, and not showing any signs of discomfort anymore.
