Pekin or Cayuga?

Although I respect the1913trio's opinion and their right to have it, please don't let one or two horror stories turn you completely away from a particular breed.

That is good to know I got some especially odd cayuga specimens, because it sure made me wonder and want to warn others of the possibility of issues with their temperament, etc. I am not meaning to speak badly about the hatchery that I got the cayugas at because I think they do a GREAT job, and they were always so helpful with any questions we had about ducklings and/or hatching eggs....perhaps it was the fact that I only purchased a couple of cayugas and I got two duds per chance due to the low number of ducks I ordered? I got the cayugas at Metzer's hatchery in Cali as hatchlings. The welsh harlequins came from hatching eggs shipped to where I am in Colorado from a small farm in North Carolina called Blue House Farm in Fairview, NC (http://www.blue-house-farm.com/). The lady that runs the NC farm is awesome too! Only have great things to say about both Metzer and the gal at Blue House Farm after doing business with them!

Help. I just found my Pekin like this. She's been eating, laying eggs and cleaning herself. Tonight I noticed she was really dirty so I thought my male was preventing her to bathe. I picked her up and that's when I noticed a major problem. It looks like she may have cut herself and now either she or the male and other females have been plucking at her. I am a Veterinarian assistant but to be honest my knowledge is mainly of cats and dogs. I put her in our bath and she was very happy, swimming, grooming and drinking. I emptied the bath and washed the wound with dawn antibacterial dish soap. I rinsed her well and refilled the bath adding apple cider vinegar. I plan on taking her to the vet in the morning but does anyone know of any natural antibiotic? Thank you.

Oh boy, that looks bad. Make your own thread and post in the emergency section as well. Hope she feels better.

Im so sorry.. I thought I did make a thread, I just can't seem to figure it out on my mobile. Im so sorry again.

Sounds like you have done pretty good with her if she isn't still bleeding. Keep her inside and away from the other ducks till you see the vet. I'd also get some Blue kote and once the wound starts to heal you can spray the heck out of it with the blue kote and it will disguise the wounds and help the healing. But I'd wait till the wound is closed first. Not sure if you can put BK on such a large open wound. Just keep her from flies because they cause maggots and that's a killer. Veterycin for wounds and infections is really a nice product to use also. The vet may want you to put her on oral antibiotics also. Please let us know what the vet says and how she is doing. Bless her heart even with an open wound she looks like she is smiling. Ducks are amazing at recovering . Oregano is a natural antibiotic you may find more info by looking it up on line.

I have four Cayuga females and have had them since they shipped as day olds. They never imprinted on me, even though we held them and loved them daily (still do and they are a year old). They HATE being held and it took more than nine months to even get them to let me pet for just a few seconds. And whoever says these are quiet ducks is out of their mind!!! They are sooo loud and will quack all hours, day or night. I had two male Anconas prior to getting these girls and they were such lovies....I am crushed that the Cayuga ducks are in no way loving or calm with people. I am ordering a Pekin drake this spring because I just want a duck who loves to be loved and I'm not ready for more Anconas (I still miss my boys so very much). Skittish is an understatement with the Cayuga breed....they won't eat from our hands, they run for the hills when you approach them, and will only tolerate a three second pet before running off. Sighhhhh...
