Pekin vs. Muscovy....

I am still at the novice stage with birds, but our first birds a few years ago were white Pekins from I believe Cackle...

They grew exceptionally fast, foraged better than my Mallards, and were very smart. They all headed for the coop right at sundown. I think they were ready to butcher at about 6-8 weeks. They never really put themselves in danger either, always VERY close to eachother and the drake was a superb protector of his girls. They always stayed close by. The downfall was they were nasty birds, pooped more than I ever imagined and like any duck made a mess in the mud - but worse!

That's what I think I'm going to do... I think I'm going to breed the male muscovy over the female pekins. I think that I will get the best of both worlds. Now to find a good meat producer of pekins....

I think this will work out great as I will only hatch what I need and sell the other eggs for eating.

Jaku... they are night and day with wild mallards and a good Pekin... (never had muscovy) Think of it as a cornish x vs a leghorn...

Hey Jeff,
If you do decide to breed Moulards please keep us informed on your progress. I am VERY interested in your results! Holderraads (sp) used to have a good strain of commercial Pekins. Good luck.

Ya I will... I have some processing I have to do next week... and a lot of year end paperwork. After that... let the projects begin! LOL... I only get about 3 months in the Spring before things really get hectic.

Anybody in the Portland Or area with White Muskovies from J&M that they would like to sell?
I don't need 15 which is the minimum order. Or anyone wanting to split a delivery?
