Hello,
I have a jumbo pekin, he is 4 yrs old and weighs 7 pounds. I've been treating his pink eye with some gel and putting apple cider vinegar in his water. I also tried vet rx bc I hear him breathing from a short distance away. Thought maybe a respiratory problem caused foamy eye. But its been close to a month it feels like and he isn't improving. Can I give him fish amoxacilin and if so what's the doseage? The capsules I have are 500mg thank you

The amoxicillin dosage for birds is 125mg/kg twice a day, or 57mg per pound, twice a day.

For a seven-pound, duck that would be roughly 400mg, twice a day, orally.

The eye is a little hard to see in the picture, but I can appreciate some erythema of the conjunctiva - am I right of those observations?

Amoxicillin may be a good choice for deep eye infections, but what I'm seeing is merely superficial/minor, and would likely respond to a topical antibiotic ophthalmic ointment. Terramycin can be found at many feed stores, and contains oxytetracycline a broad-spectrum antibiotic; before starting the Amoxicillin, I suggest applying Terramycin daily to the eye, and see if there any improvements. Flushing the eye with warm saline before applying the ointment may prove beneficial as well.

Allowing the duck access to head deep water, and providing a clean environment, free of environmental pollutants such as excess ammonia, or dusty bedding may help alleviate some of the redness being seen.

Yeah, it is red and at times foamy. I've been putting the gel in his eye for weeks so I feel like the amoxacilin is a good step I have to try something different I will split up some capsules. What's the easiest way to give that? mix with a little water on some treats? Or use a syringe? To the side of their beak so it doesn't go down their lungs...

The gel you have been using does not contain antibiotics in the product as Terramycin does - I would really suggest giving that a try for a few days before starting systemic antibiotics.

If you don't want to take that advice and want to try Amoxicillin, the dosage could be expanded to simplify things, by popping one whole capsule in the right side of his mouth twice a day. That treatment should be continued for at least seven days.

Ok, when I went to country max they didn't have the gel one with the antibiotics in it. I can see when I get paid again, I just have the amoxacilin already. I had no idea you could pill a duck like that ...interesting. thank you for all the help.:D
