peking male single now

We had a female and male Peking duck, always raised with the chickens. Yesterday was beautiful and they all free roamed in the afternoon. Ducks had a great time in the ditches and running with the chickens. I noticed the female duck was having trouble getting in and out of the run, it has about a 6 inch high fence crossing the doorway. today i come home to find the female dead in the coop, they share with the chickens. All the animal seem a bit upset, I got her out but now I am concerned with raising the drake alone, with the chicken. They have been together since we got them all. If we get other ducks they still could not be together for weeks. should he be separated from the chickens.

If he were mine, I would separate him from the chickens so that he does not develop the bad habit of breeding the hens.

So sorry about your hen.

This is a tough one. On one hand it can be dangerous to have a drake with chickens if he tries to mate them. On the other hand ducks are a flock animal and if you separate him from his flock right now he might get really depressed. I think I would leave him in with the chickens and see how he does. You could put in some roosts for the chickens to hop up on if they want to get away. If you do have to separate him I suggest making it so he can see and hear them at least, so he won't get too lonely. Good luck.

Thank you we do have roosters ( we have 4 rhode islands, 3 bantams hens, 3 bantam roosters( one a 5 months). They are all family and Buster the drake is sort of running the roost. He seem a bit depressed this morning looking for Daisy( the peking hen we lost) luckily I don't work today so I can watch them. Hope it is OK may we kind find another grown hen for him not sure if their are any around us. that is our goal, we were planning on add to the group this spring already. Thanks again, many think ducks and chickens don't mix, ours are all celebrating 1 year in a few weeks when we got them all.

I hope you can find him a couple females and it doesn't have to be Pekin unless that is what you prefer.
Very sorry for your loss. I'd try to find a large breed like Buster though.

I am in your situation as well. But my babies Morticia and Gomez were about 10 weeks old. We live in southern missouri. We came home Friday to Morticia dead. It appeared to be an Arial attack. Gomez was hiding in the tall grass by the lilies. He was terrified. (Side note , we are changing his name cause how do you have a Gomez without Morticia ). I believe he was attacked as well. He cannot quack, he walks with a limp, he is missing a toenail, and he will only eat veggies I have mashed like baby food with water added. He wants to be held constantly. I actually let him sleep in bed with us last Nighy (on 2 beach towels). He ended up curled into my arm under my shoulder with his head in my hair..... i am not sure how rehabilitate him....he is so afraid outside. HELP!
