Pellets and grit

We are new to raising chickens and I have a question. If we switch to pellets do we have to use grit? Also, what age can birds eat pellets? It seems that there is a lot of waste with the chick starter mash.

Pellets are made from milled foods, therefore, the chickens will not need grit. If they eat additional foods that are not milled, like scratch, then either grit or what rocks and sand they can find on their own, is required.

My hens aren't real happy with pellets. These critters do have preferences

I think that they should be adults or near adult size.
