In my experience, which is limited but punctuated by a coyote visit, your ducks should be penned at night. That means free ranged during the day when most predators are asleep. Of course if you had a huge lake with an island in the middle that would be different.

My pond is pretty big and we have so many birds it would literally take HOURS to get them in a pen! And my pond has islands in the middle and we have houses for them to sleep in.
