I have a turkey tom, hatched May 2011, with a badly infected foot. In addition to cleaning the foot and bandaging it I plan on giving him some penicillin because he is bad off. This is the only kind I can find locally. Advice would be appreciated as to dosing and safety. I know how to give IM injections.

Good luck tomorrow. Here is a good link that includes good pictures and a video of bumblefoot surgery: http://www.the-chicken-chick.com/2011/07/bumblefoot-causes-treatment-warning.html
That link is what I have been reading on. Posting it here will make it easy for me to find! It is an infected wound he probably got from flying down from a tree one morning. I try to catch him and put him up before can get up in a tree at night but sometimes I am at work and nobody else around here thinks about it.

We have had a rough spring around here. Nasty Cocci infection wiped out 70% of my chicks. Currently we are awaiting results as to what is causing a few of the remaining 20% to have paralysis episodes and sometimes just drop dead. And now Tom has cut his foot.

I have gone years without any problems and now it is all coming crashing down (or at least it feels that way).

ETA: My neighbor is a nurse and she came over to watch tonight's injection and bandaging our of curiosity. She says she would like to come over tomorrow to help with the cleaning. It will be nice to have an extra set of hands.

We did notice some sores on his breast (almost like bed sores according to my neighbor). Should I treat them somehow? Let them heal on their own? I am assuming it is from him spending so much time on the ground because of his foot even though I only noticed him limping a little Friday afternoon. But he is huge and spends a lot of time taking it easy in the shade.

Mr. Tom is looking better. He has lost a lot of weight so I hand fed him yesterday and today. Two injections of pen-g so far, wound is cleaned and dressed, and he is confined to his coop on some soft bedding.
