Hi all:

My local outlet will be getting their chicks tomorrow, and as a newbie I thought I'd get your impressions: I was planning on x2 BO, x2GL Wyandotte.....

1. I do not know the difference between EE's, Ameracunas, Ameracuna....just that all three have colored eggs....
2. should I get an extra chick or two in case some of my x4 don't make it...should they be bantam as my coop is rated for four larger birds?
3. If I get extras, what varieties would you suggest.

Here's pickering's chicks http://www.pickeringvalleyfeed.com/Poultry-Schedule-2013.html ...or if you have other outlets near Chester County(aside from Tracker Supply)...

TIA!

They will be hatchery quality, probably from Ideal or McMurray EDIT: After looking at the list of available breeds, the answer is Ideal.

1. I do not know the difference between EE's, Ameracunas, Ameracuna....just that all three have colored eggs....
If you're getting them from the above source, you will be getting EE's EE's are any breed x Ameracaunas

2. should I get an extra chick or two in case some of my x4 don't make it...should they be bantam as my coop is rated  for four larger birds?
I'm of the belief of having extras, because my luck either a. one will die (see above) or b. one will turn out to be a boy even in "guaranteed pullets"

3. If I get extras, what varieties would you suggest.

I'd get extras of what you are looking at.

Quote: I agree with Missy. If you want one place that answers the Araucana/Ameraucana/EE question in a short, simple way, go to Meyer Hatchery website. They now offer Ameraucanas and EE. They tell you the difference when you look at either chick.
Always get extras for the reason Missy stated. If they all make it, and are all pullets, you can always swap the extras with someone nearby.

Crap on a cracker! I went down to the basement just now to bring fresh water to the 2 chicks that I got from the NYD hatch...and one of them is dead! GAH!!! They were fine yesterday! So now I have a lonely only! I was going to move them out to the little coop inside the big coop this weekend....guess Tyler will be going by herself.
