Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hi all. Newbie questions here. I currently have 8 chicks in my brooder (a big sterilite tote, maybe 45 gallons). They are 11-13 days old. I'm thinking of getting more chicks next week from a friend who placed a large hatchery order. I can move the original 8 to an extra large dog crate (which I can reinforce to protect from the resident cats and dogs) until everyone is big enough to be together. The crate is approx 42. X 30.

Because it's so early and cold, I'm guessing these chickens need to stay inside for quite awhile? When is the earliest they can be moved outside (with a lamp)?

How long can the chicks live the crate and how many?

I guess what I'm trying to figure out is how many I can handle, total, considering The space and weather.

For now I do have a 4x4 coop that i could put a light in outside with 10x4 run. I can put this on my deck. Future plans include a 10x8 garden shed with very large run and daytime free ranging (if local wildlife allows).

Thanks for some input!

Donna
The 8 chicks can be in the crate for now. I would move them outside with a heat lamp (assuming the lamp is secure, and won't fall) in a few weeks. Now is okay too. They are too young to be in the run (if that was not known).

The grandkids would love this at easter, now i need to figure out how to make it,,,,maybe blue icing with ducks though..
AWESOME idea with the ducks..I think you can get little marzipan duckies..may have to do that as my kid sis's baby shower cake with rubber duckies...as when asked what she's having she replies "we're hoping for a baby, but it might be a hedgehog"
Anyone ever think of doing a PA swap (Chicks, eggs, ducks, and etc.) where everyone could meet for the day to swap poultry/fowl and eat, and just have a good time?
Welcome! And I volunteer Sally!

See...she volunteered herself!
Come to think of it, I think they did that last Summer. There were 2 because everyone could not travel. Maybe it never happened, but I swear it did. While some people here scare me, it does sound like fun... Dangerous fun! Someone will come with 20 chicks, and leave with 70 turkeys, and someone else will come with 20 roosters and leave with nothing!
I'll offer to be the one who shows up with 20 roosters...though, knowing me, I'll leave with something else!
I will never try to 'talk someone into' a dog... that's not fair to the person or dog! But... if someone were inclined to get a dog I'm tickled pink to help them out!!! Since you have been looking Beaglady and I just feel it is our neighborly honor to introduce you to a really cool breed that you might otherwise not get to be exposed to... and yep, we are prejudiced because we love our pups!! and they are good with other critters, and they are smart, and they love to be with their people, and they train well... and, well... I could go on and on and on! But how could you not love this face!??? or this... (some of Mindy's siblings from the farm we got her from) or this even???..... (do I really have to see that Vet person??? I'm only doing this because you told me I had to... ) So... McC... how's that willpower holding out for you???? LOL
I said "aww I want one" to the pic of Mindy on the Vet table...and fiancee looks over and goes NO! I tried to play innocent that I was talking about a chicken...but he's having none of it.
won't work I am not much of a dog person,,,i like them but prefer they go home with the owners, kind of like my grandkds...
PRECISELY how I feel! SOOO much happier now that the littles go home to their house.

Welcome, if you'd like on the map, just post your zipcode.
What time of year are y'all thinking of for the PA Unite gathering? I can run the idea of hosting past hubby. I don't think I'd be organized to do it before June, but if that time works, my place has lots of other advantages. 1) Centrally located. I hour from York/Lancaster/Grantville/Gardners, 2 hours from Chester county, about 1-1/2 hours from State College, Berks. etc. 2) Room to camp - 26 acres 3) Alcohol is allowed
I think this is an awesome offer! I vote for you! So.....ummm.....well...ok....ya'll know I don't do anything normal right? This one is TOTALLY not my fault! Fiancee got a wild hair the other day and decided we needed to go get the marriage license...even though the wedding's not till October....but you know...these things expire after 60 days...and then you have to go get a new one....so now we're playing the ultimate April Fool's joke on everyone....and getting married on April 1. We're still having the wedding in October...but it will be just for show...the paperwork will be all done.

Maybe I can finally help!!! Not sure where you guys are located, But I went to the Quakertown Vet when my Oriencia was sick, I HIGHLY Recommmend them! The woman I met with was awesome she is an avairan specialist! And she had pictures of chickens(past Patients) http://www.quakertownvetclinic.com/

But, I tried the Tetracycline, and such. What I learned from was.. That is good but you need to make sure they are getting the correct Dosage, for the Breed/weight, Or it's not going to be as effective ( Like putting it in their water and hoping they are getting enough, and that crap stinks, i doubt it tastes any better) She ended up prescribing a pill antibiotic.. She did tell me what was wrong, but she was talking pretty quick, chest infections of some sort.. I felt so much better after talking to her and I ended up treating 2 birds, and everyone has been great since! (Knock on wood)

That is why I do injections. I know they are getting the correct dose, I can treat only the ones that are ill.

Yes, we're talking about English shepherds. Generally, they are low prey drive - depends a bit on the breeder and what they've selected for exactly 'how' low their prey drive is. Many of them have prey drive in relation to hunting vermin, but are perfectly willing to protect their human's chickens, lambs or whatever. Most ES bond to their humans very strongly, and would probably be unhappy to be with livestock 24/7, unless their human was out there too. This article helps explain.

Thank you for the info, so they are not like Great Pyrenees! That helps............

feeling really down today for some reason, anyway my husband went to cts last night to get some bolts for the calfs stall gate(shes learned how to lift it the old bolt up and get out) and he came home and said they have speckled sussex chicks, and since i feel down, tempted to get some but i don't need another breed
idunno.gif
sharron.... I think you missed something.... HE told you they have speckled sussex... now Radioman would know better than to tell me something like that unless HE wanted the new ones but didn't want to admit it! He can be sneaky that way! I don't have any sussex but I understand they tend to be good for meat and broodiness??? So never hurts to grab a few while you can if you know you can send them to freezer camp or have them raise little ones for you in the future.... Win/Win!!!!

and like McC said, you can enjoy them as little ones and always trade them later if you change your mind! Sounds like good therapy to me!!
