Quote: I have to tell you that any thing past 2 days of age makes it even less accurate, and most are that age by the time they make it to the feed stores....you will need to try to remember from when you first got them,,,the males will have feathers all in a straight line (very little difference in length can still be a male ) the females will have a distinct pattern where every other feather is of very different length from short to tall and back to short then tall......after 2 or 3 days old even the males will have the varied lengths......
it is very hard to tell from a picture, you really need a close up view of just the wing....

no proof behind this one just an observation of lots of chicks, but if you look in those pictures you will see that some of them are starting to grow very different looking wing feathers and others are still covered in the peep fuzz,,,,i find that the females are usually the ones to first grow these wing feathers, males are a little slower at growing feathers

Yes, as I said I noticed differences the first day. I marked the ones.that still show.smaller wings. These chicks.were.day olds.when I got them, and 7 had more developed.wing feathers, the other 9 had smaller wings, smaller feathers. The 7 more feathered wings now have tails, the 9 have no tails, just fuzz. I know many will have a hard time telling by these photos, but if someone could list wyandotte traits they look for, I have taken lengthy notes. This is partially due to this being.the start of a genetic study of color for biochemistry genetics class, next spring.
If anyone is.willing to list what they look for at 1-2 days of age, I can.review my notes and figure out which group is which.
Thanks

Ok, tell me about these! How big are their eggs? Good layers? Good personality?

from this picture I would guess from the feeder first male , female, male, female....2 of each....my guess is based on the feather growth alone..

So excited about raising this breed. They lay moderate to extra large sky blue eggs. I received 2 VERY large eggs in my order to incubate and I recently read someone with a 64g egg from one of their cream legbars. They are beautiful. From what I read they are friendly, easily handled and good layers (approx 4-5 eggs/week) Most attractively that are true Auto sexing in that generation after generation females have a chipmunk-link line near eyes and full striping down back. Males are dull at hatch with yellow spot on head. They are very easy to distinguish. This is a fairly new breed brought to the US in 2011 by Greenfire farms.
