Isn't it the greatest thing, BirdbyGavin? I am actually enjoying the time. I haven't figured out if its because they can break them easier if I hold them or what, but I like to think its because we have become so close. They are just darling. And Blarney........can i ever say THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU enough??? This whole thing has just been amazing! I hope they continue to love me so much when they get older.
I think that's part of it because they eat the ones I crush and mix with their feed, just not the ones I toss for everyone to find. It is fun, I've been using it to get them used to being handled, they were a few weeks old when I got them and weren't handled much. Gets some of my other girls up on my lap when I want them too.

I didn't realize you still hadn't captured the escapee. You can try to cut a 10 or 15 ft piece of 3ft high or so chicken wire... place a trail of treats like raisins or meal worms to an area either near a wall or somewhere wide open. Get the little one onto the trail of treats and then have someone holding each end of the wire and use it to either herd it into the pop hole or trap him by surrounding him. Then grab him up and return him to pen.
That's what my (future) FIL said tonight, lol. We'll give it a try Friday during the day when Gavin doesn't have school, unless we catch her before then. We won't have time after school tomorrow (Little League game in Benton) and my Dad has trouble with the hill. Thanks for the idea of treats, he only suggested the corralling part.

South central! New Oxford to be exact.
Sorry- funny story and I had to share. So, you all know I have babies hatched last week out of the eggs Blarney gave me. My Mille Fleur Cochin banties. Well, we have bonded VERY MUCH, and apparently their meal worm treats taste best when Mommy is holding them. Have them in a baby pool for now, and I lay on the floor frequently to cuddle and play with them. I guess all the barn cleaning and landscaping has caught up to me, because mid treats, I dozed off a bit. Woke to find myself with my face half in the brooding pool, and 4 little fuzzy chicky butts in my face because my babies decided to cuddle me and join me in a nap......

ALL 4 NUZZLED UP AND SNOOZING AWAY. I guess it must sound strange, but it was so cute that they were snuggling me and napping that I was completely warm and fuzzy and overlooked the chicky butt in the face thing. I LOVE MY BABIES!!!!!

Love cuddling with my birds, though this sick one is gonna drive me insane...she's recently decided that the basket we gave her, and the towel she's been on all day weren't good enough...she wants to sleep in my hair...not on top of my head...sitting on the arm of the couch...with her head in my hair!

They do love cuddling... and I've had numerous ones mess with my hair, must be a chicken thing. My one rooster will take clips and bands out of my hair if I am sitting on the ground and has even undone braids after pulling out the band. Guess he doesn't think my feathers should be fixed like that!

But you should take it as a compliment Missy, your hen thinks you are part of her flock and is just hiding her head under your hair instead of under her own wing!

So IDK if I am the only person to have a duck that can't swim or what???? My Khaki Campbell decided to drown. I went out to sit with them this evening and I always count them. Since there is only one Khaki Campbell I knew immediately who was missing. I went and looked in the water trough. There he was........................I thought he was playing in the water. So I sat down, and was like he isn't moving. So I proceeded to walk over and check things out closer. He was dying! He was cold, limp, and eyes were glazed over.

So I kicked it into save Campbell mode! I turned him upside down and let water drain out of his beak. I squeezed the extra water off of him. Then I wrapped him in my shirt and gave him rescue breaths and chest compressions. Yes I did!!!!! I saved my duck with CPR!!!! He spewed up a bunch of water, then I took him into my car to dry him off, and warm him up. I can say that when I left him tonight that he is going to be okay! He was grooming and hanging out with the other ducks!

I love my animals so much! I sell birds, but I do get quite attached. I hate when an animal dies. There was no way in h E l L I was going to let that happen! I might not keep Campbell forever, but he will always be a miracle!!!!

How old is he. Younger ducks often get waterlogged & tired & then can't get out of he water & end up drowning especially if hey can't reach bottom to stand. I always make sure my younger ducks have shallow enough water that they can stand up in it if they get tired. Older birds can do the same, but it takes a lot longer to happen & it usually happens because they get stuck in the water & can't get out. The only other thing I can think of to cause it is a problem with his oil glands that aren't producing well enough to waterproof him very well.

Another chick died today. Another one gasping really bad. The ones dying now are all the 1-2wk chicks. I have a few still sneezing, but other than the gasper, no one looks horrid. They have another week of antibiotics to administer. I had to buy more Oxine and it's on it's way. I was running the humidifier over them with Oxine in it until I ran out. I will be misting them this time. The humidifier doesn't produce as much steam as I'd like to see.

I finally pushed past the anger and explained to the old woman why I was mad and what her choices were going to do to us. Even though I told her, I guess she didn't understand the landslide she'd cause and bury us with. I asked her straight out if living with us was that bad. She said no. I asked if she would be willing to make a deal with me so both of us get what we want in the end and no one gets steamrolled. I asked if she could handle living with us until next year income tax time (8 months). If she still thinks she wants to move to a nursing home, so be it. I will have the money to move or put a down payment on the/a house and she'll hopefully be divorced by then. I was firm on her living on her own and that it would not work. I used today's examples to instill this. She does not know what her meds are and I have to sort them for the week for her. She had 2 baskets of clothes to be washed and she can not do her laundry herself. She had a bag of garbage that needs to be taken out and she can not take her own garbage out. She can't clean and she can't cook. I took her in knowing what I would have to do (it's like a 3rd child) and I took her back after she fell knowing what was needed (although I did not expect the unsanitary way she'd go about 'caring' for her colostomy bag). So, I will not have to sell my flock, I will not have to move for now and I can carry on as I was. But, I will be cautious. I want her to sign a lease so she's bound.

My mom's horse's strangles lumps did not burst today. During one of my breaks from applying hot compresses to Belle's lumps - a task I did for 15-45mins every 30min from 8am to 2pm today - The rescue my mom got her horse from was raided by the FBI April 30th. I'm sure some of you in Berks know the rescue in question. I told mom about it and how they have sold sick and dying horses before. The vet suspects it took Belle a week to start really showing signs of strangles because they gave her penicillin to cover it up. I am so glad I didn't get a horse through them. I told mom I'll go to New Holland or Middleburg and buy my horse for the sale price and not their over inflated, pocket lining price. Thanks, but no thanks. Sickening that people can prey on the good natures of other people. I'm glad mom got a good horse and Belle got a good human/s in the end, though.

So... some good, some bad and some neutral today.
