Heya all!! Hope everyone is doing well! Sorry to hear about the kitten, hope there is a full recovery, hi to all the new people and their cute lil chicks!

Been MIA the past few days as we got our new house guest, so have been socalising etc He cleans just about as well as my hubby, so that has already lead to a convo with the hubster about making sure his friend cleans up after himself as I am not a maid!

Got THE fright of my life today, was out with the chickens, gave them a bit of a light misting with the hose considering the HORRIBLE humidity, changed their water, added some ice cubes to amuse them, some treats ..... walk back inside, sit down on the couch and hear someone running up the deck out the front followed by frantic banging on the door.

I walk out to find my neighbours daughter and her boyfriend (i think they are about 18-20) and her bf brad goes - I really hate to tell you this but I think a HAWK

just got one of your chickens. So we all rush around to the side of the house - I am all panicy and not thinking straight as all I can think is OMG how am i going to tell my 4yr old that Kofi got killed (it looked like the smallest one) .... then I take a second look at the mess on the grass ........ no barred feathers ..... this info hits my brain something like this ..... no ........ barred ........... FEATHERS!!!!!!!!!!

I am not sure what the bird is - but it was totally a Hawk that got it - Mr or Ms Hawk is no longer around from what I was told & then later saw (I didn't touch it) but I was wondering, what happens regarding the law if a protected bird comes after your animals .... from what I was looking at online - there are 11 types of Hawks/Flacons that are protected ...... anyone have any ideas or should I email game/wildlife about this (well not the incident but to inquire about what I can do)

The chicks were put in their coop, soon after taking this pic and they remained there. I swung by the hardware store on the way home from preschool pick up and got some of that bird netting to put up on either side of the run, from the garage to the trees & got them some meal worms as a treat.


I just couldn't believe how many feathers were off it - Brad, brittanys bf was saying it was just standing on the ground over it, plucking it and biting its neck. Glad he happened to look out the window when he did. I think if we get any raccoons etc i'll be going to him for dispatch till we get a gun!

hawks are a problem. it is federal law not to kill a hawk. wink wink. so with that said. keep them penned for a while with netting over top. easy pray is easy pray in the hawks eyes.

Technically ALL raptors (birds of prey) are protected by federal law, and it is illegal to kill or even harass them (like using non-lethal rounds or blanks). That being said, I have no love for b.s. laws that protect an animal that has a high enough population to be a nuisance. The PAGC will only tell you to put up netting and stuff that flashes to protect against diurnal raptors and to lock the birds up at night and motion sensor lights for nocturnal raptors. I emailed them a while ago because we have three red-tail hawk families, and at least three great horned owls up here, along with other predators. The motion sensor lights will supposedly help with other nocturnal predators, although we've had all kinds of PIA animals show up over the years even with our lights.

Speaking of predators, I still haven't gotten the coyote, but Ginger is feisty as ever. The score so far this summer Ginger-5, opossums-0, and skunks-0.

I know at one time multiple raptor speicies were legally hunted. I honestly am not sure why they were included in an amendment to the Migratory Bird Treaty Act. All I know is we have too many around my house. There are hardly any rabbits or squirrels anymore, even compared to 3 years ago. At that time I could have a sunrise cup of coffee and see between 10-15 rabbits in the yard, now I'm lucky to see two. Now we get bear in the bird feeders instead of squirrels. I lost kittens to a hawk last year, and one full grown cat to an owl this year (I only know because I saw them get taken, had others disappear). It sucks and when I've asked the PAGC to do something about them I've been told there's nothing they can do (according to the officials I've talked to)... Just so frustrating

Anyway, no hazmat suits. They did come and remove all my chickens (per my request since I was going to get rid of them anyway to start fresh) but it was just one guy in his little Camry haha. The backyard is pretty lifeless now as I disinfect everything and throw everything away in preparation for the chicks that are coming in a week to move in there in a month.
Anyone have experience with Murray Mcmurray? I got 15 little babies from them and I am hoping more then 4 live with proper care.
 

Thanks for this info. Sorry you lost your chooks. Do you have guinnea fowl? Did they take that too? I haven't used Murray mcmurry, but heard good things about them.

I think I would have looked before I went.... (actually would have only went on vaca to a place I wanted eggs from... everything else is 2nd fiddle)

Now THIS is a true sign of having stepped over to the dark side. Oh yeah, I see interviews with hoarding shows in your near future.
