I am so glad your chickens are safe!   You also sound like such a good chicken mom as you safeguarded your little ones and bought the net and the treats!  AWwww
they really are like our family.............way to go!

re kitten incident........
Also I am sorry about not thinking the "hit a kitten" might mean by auto or like that...........
I am sorry for your kitten and your FIL and you all...........and so glad the kitten got the vets care!......

todays little coop project ( considering this oppressive heat and that I do work a reg job)
today I cut the linoleum or vinyl stuff I got for the flooring and poop drawer.

I also have a rectangular piece left over that I think will make a nice poop hammock of sorts for the back room!
I will just secure it to some dowels or something and hang it on the wall................

I also purchased some supplies as I prepare.........pine bedding..........and made 2-3 waterers out of containers I had on hand...............gosh they are easy to do!

I am building a mealy worm farm and just am wondering if the substrate of oat bran and wheat / oats stuff might also yield other bugs..............like the ones you get in food in the pantry that has been there forever............what kind of bugs are those?   Will I be breeding all kinds of bugs and get some kinda household infestation?

My 3 drawer system is not airtight between layers...................Hmmm anyone know about this?

That's ok. The kitten is still resting. I hope she recovers also. She has a really great personality.

I keep hearing about a mealworm farm. Is it easy to keep up with? I am starting to consider one for my birds.

Heya all!! Hope everyone is doing well! Sorry to hear about the kitten, hope there is a full recovery, hi to all the new people and their cute lil chicks! Been MIA the past few days as we got our new house guest, so have been socalising etc He cleans just about as well as my hubby, so that has already lead to a convo with the hubster about making sure his friend cleans up after himself as I am not a maid! Got THE fright of my life today, was out with the chickens, gave them a bit of a light misting with the hose considering the HORRIBLE humidity, changed their water, added some ice cubes to amuse them, some treats ..... walk back inside, sit down on the couch and hear someone running up the deck out the front followed by frantic banging on the door. I walk out to find my neighbours daughter and her boyfriend (i think they are about 18-20) and her bf brad goes - I really hate to tell you this but I think a HAWK

just got one of your chickens. So we all rush around to the side of the house - I am all panicy and not thinking straight as all I can think is OMG how am i going to tell my 4yr old that Kofi got killed (it looked like the smallest one) .... then I take a second look at the mess on the grass ........ no barred feathers ..... this info hits my brain something like this ..... no ........ barred ........... FEATHERS!!!!!!!!!! :weee

I am not sure what the bird is - but it was totally a Hawk that got it - Mr or Ms Hawk is no longer around from what I was told & then later saw (I didn't touch it) but I was wondering, what happens regarding the law if a protected bird comes after your animals .... from what I was looking at online - there are 11 types of Hawks/Flacons that are protected ...... anyone have any ideas or should I email game/wildlife about this (well not the incident but to inquire about what I can do) The chicks were put in their coop, soon after taking this pic and they remained there. I swung by the hardware store on the way home from preschool pick up and got some of that bird netting to put up on either side of the run, from the garage to the trees & got them some meal worms as a treat. I just couldn't believe how many feathers were off it - Brad, brittanys bf was saying it was just standing on the ground over it, plucking it and biting its neck. Glad he happened to look out the window when he did. I think if we get any raccoons etc i'll be going to him for dispatch till we get a gun!
If u don't wanna spend alot of money on netting, running rope or wire crisscrossed back n forth in your yard will prevent anything flying from swooping down to get your chickens.

Lol on the tire names. As far as lucky, i said something about that name to the vet. He said NO that lucky was the worst name we could give her due to the fact that as things happen, we name her Lucky and something major goes wrong. He said that's just the way it seems to work.
We are considering the tire names though as it seems to lighten the air about what happened. And it gave us all a chuckle. :D

I thought about that but then my husband isn't here, he has the ladder on his work van, this I can just attach to the wood and then hoist the wood up and screw it to existing wood on the back of the garage, then attach it to the trees. I'd rather know they were safe for sure instead of waiting till sunday, poss mon/tues when hubby gets home.

On a good note, just got a call about our runaway dog, waiting on her to be returned right now ....

Yay for doggie coming back home!

Yeah, now I just have to keep her on a lead everytime she is outside. She was always spooked by noises but after the guy with the 50 cal went nuts on the 7 she just ran off. Might have to set up a little lead on a wire close to the ground as like a little run area for her. WIsh I could let her run around on her own but don't want to risk losing her again

Had to do the same thing for our one dog. She likes to wonder off too. Our male is content to stay here but not her. Our male doesn't like loud noises either but he just runs to the house or one of us. Lol A big chicken he is... gig.

I might be ready to buy pullets this weekend................I have two possible sellers.............anyone else know where I can get 3-5 pullets of these varieties
