I hope someone with experience can help me understand my broody or maybe not so broody hen. She sat in her nest all day yesterday and last night when I checked on her. This morning she wasn't in her nest but there was an egg in there. I went out twice since then and she is in the nest but kicked the egg out. The rest of the chickens are free ranging and she is still sitting tight in the nest. What is her deal? Is this normal broody behavior? The egg she kicked out was from the other silkie not her own.

Put the egg back in. If she kicks it out again, I would assume it was a dud.

I just listed a pair of muscovy crossbred ducks in the 'free' part of the forum. 1 gray/white male, 1 solid white female. Both were hatched last summer, and are almost certainly crossed with pekins.

They're entertaining, and you'll be spared the prolific amount of offspring you'd end up with if they weren't mixes (scovy crosses are sterile) They don't fly either, another advantage to the crosses.

if she is sitting on phantom eggs on a nest. she is broody. a broody will get up off the nest a couple times a day to eat and drink.
