Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

Hi all...now that the weather is going to start getting cooler I wanted to see what others were doing to keep their chickens warm. Are your coops insulated? Mine is not. I was wondering how necessary it would be or is there another way for them to stay warm? I'm definitely willing to insulate but I wanted to find out what others in PA were doing, first. Thanks!

I don't do anything. My breeds all handle the child well, although I do get some frostbitten combs.

Stake. These hogs were supposed to be a part of a 4H project, shown and sold for process in early August, it's a pretty sweet deal where they send a trailer, help you load your hogs, ect... But apparently that is way too organized and simple for the DeFilippo clan, we like to go about things the hard way.

Just watched a food network show...the guy who eats weird stuff....there was a chef who started raising gormet pigs then slaughtering them for his resturant in NewOrleans(his place will process hogs for local farmers)....kinda kewl...it really isn't easy to slaughter a pig....do you do your own hams/smoking etc?

On a side note....one of my girls went broody...she laid one yesterday and I snuck it out...she was just as happy with a golf ball....today I left her have the egg she laid and tomorrow I'll throw three or four more under her...she was making some weird sounds this evening when the rest of the flock returned to the roost....I guess three weeks from now they'll be some new chirping....

oh my, talk about snake oil salesmen......btw my mother never ate chicken wings....lol
TMI man...TMI.

LMAO I had to share this. I love how PETA always blurs the facts to suite their needs...

hmmmm... now do these breeds feed this child as well?? And are they so distracted by careing for this child that they neglect their combs and get frostbite? Kinda strange. LOLLL

I don't do anything but put plastic over my wire windows in the winter. If they can't stand the cold, get out of my flock. If they can't handle the heat, get out of my flock. Sorry, I try to stay as emotionally detached as possible. My birds are utilitarian.

Hiya Becky!!!

OMG!! I loved that movie!! She is an awesome woman!! Talk about over-coming some huge hurtles!!! Her mother is a huge, if not the reason why she has been able to even have a 'normal' life...so cool. Did you get to meet her? And YES, that is THE baby...hahaha- Chick-a-dee. There were 3, but unfortunately they did not make it. She is truly the spoiled child..

....and she knows it.

I liked the movie also, and her books!! She was the reason we went to the fair in the first place. We saw her in the bookstore wondering around and asked her to sign James' book (unfortunately, I had purchased a book the day before but didn't have it with me

). She was really nice and a good saleswoman... she told us to buy the third book!

I am going to do my best. I had no idea it was so big that it would take 3 days to get through! I will make sure I get there early and get in as much as I can. Maybe this is just a warm up for next year. I'll know what I am walking into and maybe plan a little better to spend at least a couple days. It's probably an hour drive for me so it's not like I would have to get a hotel room. The problem is dragging my 7 and 5 year olds along. I can get a babysitter for one day but 2 or 3 days is MUCH more difficult.

It may not take you 2-3 days, but we are dilly-dalliers! We spent a good deal of time checking out (almost) every vendor. I stopped at the flowers, seeds, greenhouses, bees, poultry and food vendors and hubby liked the power equipment, sawmills, hit and miss engine ice cream and anything else that made a lot of noise!! I thought the workshops were really good too. It helped being there a couple of days because most of the lecture halls were packed on Sat. They do have a whole series of kid's workshops, so you could bring them with a babysitter!
