OK... so I am finally getting out my recipe box on a night I have a laptop available. ....

My pickled egg recipe....

This is just a combination I came up with to suit our taste. About all of the ingredients can be adjusted to suit personal tastes. I add a can of commercially canned pickled beets just to add color to the juice. It doesn't need to be added, I imagine you could use a few drops of food coloring also, I just like the color the pickled beets add.

I prefer to do larger batches, but quantities can be halved or otherwise divided to suit your needs.

36 small to medium eggs, hardboiled and peeled
8 cups water
4 to 6 cups of white vinegar (suit to taste, start with 4 and add till you are happy with how tart it is) I use 6
4 Tablespoons Pickling spice
2 cups white sugar (again, can be more or less, depending on taste)
4 teaspoons minced or fresh crushed garlic
4 whole Bay leaves
1 cup fresh minced onion
1 can (15 oz) Pickled Beets, brand of preference

Place eggs into a large mouthed glass container (or 2 smaller ones) with screw on or otherwise securable lid

Drain beet juice into large pan, add remaining ingredients to pan and bring to a boil
Reduce heat to simmer for about 5 minutes
Pour hot juice over eggs in container(s)

Beets from the can may be added to eggs or set aside for other use, whichever you prefer.
Allow to cool on counter and then place in fridge for 10 days to soak.
After the 10 days the juice/color should be soaked well into the eggs and they are ready to enjoy!
Sounds tasty, i may need to try this recipe.

My simple recipe:
Hard boiled eggs
1/2 beet juice 1/2 acv (the cheap stuff is fine)
Put hard boiled eggs (peeled) in jar. Cover with liquid combination. add beets if you want. Add one cinnamon stick if desired. Screw on lid, refrigerate a day or two.

Personally I don't really enjoy them, but i've made for others and they said they wer good.
Sounds like ours only we add sugar.

PHEW! It's been too long eh? No time to go through the hundreds of posts. Just wanted to pop on and say how excited I am for the sharpsburg swap! :D I think I'm gonna ride down with Joan; my loverman has no desire. Poo on him cuz now I have no adult supervision and if I come home with part of a new flock it's aaaaalll okay

I have a broody hen, that I don't really wanna move around and try to keep on eggs, can I just give her chicks? Or will she refuse em? I think I could fool her but....

HOW"S EVERYONE BEEN?.....Sorry, I am so very hyper at the moment

too much redbull!!
Hi Kiomey, Bwhahah with the coming home with a new flock...my other half hasn't learned yet either.

WEELLLLLL since I am too poor for the gas to the Seven Springs fair thingy I am going to the bloomsburg fair instead.... A LOT closer LOL! Any one else going on any particular day?

We're going to try to go. Gavin has some art and loves going. I'm not keen on crowds of any sort so I don't know when it'll be. Most likely early this Sat or Sun.
My dear friends,
The turkeys came back. And this time, got the game commission out. He tracked down the owner, who is a guy that lives on the other side of these woods and decided to raise them just for watching them, but they just took off. He doesn't want them and told Game commission to tell me to take them.
Two have disappeared, and the game commission thinks between coyotes and traffic it is not surprising. We now have them, and they are safe and sound. No more holding my breath waiting for them to cross the road! WHEW!!!

Glad they came back and you can keep them.

I have an Eeyore necklace like this lol.

So has anyone ever felt like this?
I'd love to do something like that, funds are the only thing keeping it from happening to be honest.

I would be very interested! Depending on timing I may prefer eggs over live birds (if we have a broody at the time) but it is a breed that was on my 'short list' but I haven't found yet locally.
I'll let you know what I find out from her as far as costs and everything else.

I did forget to mention Canada has what's basically a "general tax." It goes on EVERYTHING, food, clothing, services etc. Anyway that increases the cost of everything right off the bat and the exchange rate sucks anymore. During tourist season you are lucky if $1 American gets you $.95 Canadian now, I remember it being $1.30 Canadian for every $1 American during summer...

Hmmmmmmm...critter list for my "petting zoo"
1 peninsula cooter (aquatic turtle)
2 goats
2 ball pythons
2 rabbits
11 geese (4 breeds)
6 mice & multiplying (snake food)
6 turkeys
10 guineas
16 roosters (at least 11 need homes)
17 hens/pullets
4 ducklings
8 polish
10 muscovies
8 pekins
5 rouens
7 anconas
3 khakis
2 welshies
3 khaki/welshie crosses
13 runners
70+ chicks in the brooder
2 norwegian jaerhon chicks (a pair)

Plus 2 monkeys & a 41 yr old child.

Does anyone know who I contact in the southwestern part of pa about getting a chicken tested? We had a sick chicken that I treated with Tylan and she had gotten better, then recently declined. We separated her again to get her some one on one time with food and water. She was very hungry and thirst last night and was eating and drinking well today. I went to the coop to get her some more chick feed, scratch and BOSS. Before I went down, she was standing up at the water dish. When I came back up, she was on her side trying to die. I helped her on her way, but want to see what we are dealing with.
Help?

Many moons ago, I had one dog,one cat, and tropical fish.....as they got older and passed I expanded into the foster dog thing.....I had 3-4 around for a couple of years....now I have one adoptee and one foster thats not going anywhere....

My original goal was 4 chooks...somebody informed me one would die and one would be a roo, so I got 6....no roo and no deaths....

Then I upgraded my coop and I got a rescue CCL Roo.....yes my neighbors' were the enablers....

Then because there was room, I added a couple of BC Marans....

Well, there's still room in the coop....and I know its only a matter of time before something show up....part of me hopes my broody hatches a few and that willl make the decision for me...
