Good morning all. I have three eggs still sitting under my mama from my hatch two days ago....how much variance is there in egg hatching? My understanding is 20-21 days...are these eggs still viable or should I chuck them? TIA!

Normal is 21 days, but broodies don't read the books, so they do things their own way.... If she is still sitting on them I would let her be. Make sure there is food and water close by that the hatched chicks can easily reach. I don't remember if you said you gave them all to her at the same time or not. If she gets up with the chicks you can candle them or tap them to see if their is a viable chick, if she gets up and abandons the nest (lets it get cold, stays off the eggs for multiple hours or makes a nest somewhere else for her and the little ones) then you can either chuck the unhatched eggs or move them to an incubator if you think they are still viable.

Hey:

Minor bit if drama today:

When I went to let the cooks out of the coop this morning found a bloody pile of poo...Came from my baby basque roo...I got him into the grow out pen cleaned the poo spots in the main coop....used vinegar and went looking for Corid 20% powder...read on here, .4tsp per gallon of water (x5days) and am treating all the chooks except broody and the chicks...I don't know if it will help, but I am giving the roo medicated crumbles too. I watched him eat and drink so he's had his first shot of meds....

If I'm doing something wrong, please correct me...I could find no info on if this affects the eggs...or if I had meaties....

You need to treat the entire pen, if one has cocci they have all been exposed.....can not remember the dosage but medicated feed and water sounds like a bit to much...........HEATHER........we need help here...

Keep updated Stake! Hope all goes well!

Update on the coop: got my shingles up and the vinyl sheeting up on the inside of the walls. It's coming along! Now. Have to creat my nest box and attach it. Does anybody have their nest box separately? I'm sure it's best to keep it in the coop. But does anyone have one in their run also/instead?

Also, went to the Chicken Seminar today at Primex Garden Center in Glenside today. It was very informative, although a lot of these things I already knew from reading. But I got to hold a little chick! It was only $10, and then you were given a $5 store credit to use also. Well worth it to have a small group setting with question and answer time. And to make some chicken friends! :) Hope everyone's weekend is going well!
