as everyone knows I like to keep a variety of birds, so I get a variety of egg colors....

why do folks insist on a certain egg color?

no matter what I say, they insist that the eggs are somehow different....I can not sell white eggs..

city folk that I know will not buy green eggs, and some tell me that brown eggs are dirty, that is why they are brown.

PA CHRISTMAS SWAP

Ok, I have 2 people signed up so far. I need more!!!

Here's how this will work:

PM me with your address & any food allergies you have. You may join up to 3 times, just tell me how many people you want to send to. This will be an ornament/figurine related to Christmas or poultry and some type of edible goodies to go with it. Either the goodies OR the ornament/figurine MUST be homemade. You may make BOTH if you like but you (or the kids) must make at least part of this gift. Total value before shipping should be about $5-7 (just a small gift). Don't put a fortune into this. It's just for fun & to share with our friends for the holiday season. I will collect names until the 7th & assign partners by the 9th. All packages need to be shipped by the 16th. You may or may not be sending to the same person you are receiving from. You may recruit people from other states if you like, but I will only be posting about it here.

OK, now send me your info & join the holiday fun!!!

Hi !
My name is Dennis and I'm new to BYC, but not new to keeping poultry (off and on, but starting about 40 years ago). I'm hoping to connect with other poultry enthusiasts in SE PA. My birds are really owned and maintained by my nieces on a dairy farm in Northern Chester County. I'm the uncle who helps and advises them.

I have several "projects" in the works that I am looking for help with. First, I am going to try building my own incubator this winter to increase the number of eggs I can incubate at one time. I've used the styrofoam incubators a lot in the past with reasonable success, but I'm pretty sure I can make a much better cabinet-type. I'm interested in buying some hatching eggs from local people next spring, especially any of the auto-sexing varieties, like Cream Legbars.

Secondly, I want to buy some more guineas, but don't really need 30 of them (the minimum required by the Guinea Farm in Iowa). I want to get Buff Dunbars because they are color sexable. If anyone is interested in buying some guinea keets next year, let me know and maybe we can split an order.

I have a trio of guineas available that were hatched the end of May. The cock is royal purple & the hens are pearl & pearl pied. $50 for the trio if you are interested.

Thanks, but I have my heart set on Buff Dundottes. We free range most of them but the foxes get all the hens eventually, forcing me to buy a new batch every few years. So I'm being smarter with the next batch. I'm going to keep the hens and a few males permanently confined in a large cage with our peacocks or turkeys, and free range the extra males. Then, I can get fertile eggs from the caged females and hatch them, The keets can be sexed and sold or free-ranged.
If anyone thinks this sounds like a good plan and wants to join in, let me know. I am just outside Philly and I know I can easily sell the extra keets, or just free range them if I have too many females. With shipping they are about $5 each, not much more than regular pearls go for around here, and being able to sex the keets is a huge advantage, I think.

Dennis:

I will have CCL roo over BO, GLW, Marans, and maybe Dorkings hatchings eggs...in the spring...If you want to do a bater, Sally Sunshine (who used to be on here) had pretty good instructions...on this site....

The only pure breed CCLs I know of is H&H near Harrisburg....I do have a contact from SC who said she will be traveling to State College to visit in the summer and have some pullets or eggs to sell along the way....who knows....
