Happy Monday morning everyone! Here we are already in the last week of August. Our kids start back to school next week, and this mama is not ready for that! This year I will have a 3rd grader, a 1st grader, a kindergartener and a pre-schooler. This is our kids first year in public school and to say I am a little nervous is putting it mildly!!

Fall will soon be upon us. So I am wondering what you do for your chickens/coops to help prepare them for the cold and snow?

I was really hoping it was something like that. Had an another thought, but didn't think this was a support group for couples like that. Maybe a support group for Chicken Addicted Anonymous.

Congrats on sending the brood to school. I have a blend much like yours heading to all different grades.

As far as fall/winter prep. I'm not sure what I will do. My coop and run as it stands is protected on one side by a cinderblock garage and I do landscaping, So I have been salvaging pieces of fence that I remove when I install one. I have been using the fencing to block the wind and am using the repurposed fence to build a bigger coop. Along with some materials picked up that were thrown from another jobsite and soon I will have a snazzy lil setup that didn't cost but screws to put it together and a few nails for the shingles.

I am going to make sure I update all of my weather stripping on my windows and nest boxes and I am going to get one of those heated bases for my outside metal waterer, has anyone used one of those before?

I think I will also cover one of the sides of the run in the direction that the wind usually blows in when we have storms.

I was just cleaning out the coop yesterday thinking to myself boy this is going to be crazy when I have to do this in the snow!!!

Since this will be my first winter having chickens I was wondering (and this may seem like a stupid question) but do you guys usually leave them locked up if there is a storm during the day? Mine can go under their coop (which is usually where they prefer if it is raining).
 
I got my sebrights in February of this year. My coop is actually a cinderblock garage. When it was just the 3 of them, I used a heat lamp in there. I think with all of them, that won't be necessary. I am going to get a piece of weather stripping to put on the clean out door (barn doors on rollers) as they don't quite meet evenly. My coop is set up that the pop door can be closed with the screen door so they get fresh air, or closed with the solid door so that snow/rain don't come in.
 
I was thinking too that I could throw a few cornish X in with each pen and that much bird has got to put put a good bit of heat. And if one of those goes down. Its whats for dinner lol
