Mornin' everybody!

Still trying to convince my silly chickens that snow is fun. And not having much luck. I thought they might come out today as they all gathered around me when I stepped into the run this morning and seemed to want out the door. So I opened the door, everybody peeked out as usual and Peedles took up his post on the door sill.

Then Kinder, the Gold Sebright took a giant leap right over top of him and flew out and across the yard towards the garden where they usually head first to pick through the scraps composting there. Poor thing landed on the garden fence and then just sort of looked around like "What the Heck!" I guess she didn't realize the garden was just as snow covered as the rest of the yard until she got there.

I had to go back inside and put on my boots to walk over and rescue her after a few minutes. (I was afraid if I left her there she'd fly off and end up on the wrong side of the chainlink fence. And then I'd be chasing her around the patch.

I did snap a pic of her first though, she looked so adorable sitting there all mad. Poor little honey ^_^

you cant be PT and AI clean you are void the AI unless you test 90 days.  read the federal provisions. You are Void of the AI clean. you are simply PT clean and your certificates are void, any AI clean is 90 days for ALL Subparts of the Plan.  I understand why they do this as well, AI can spread like wildfire.

They certify us pt clean & ai monitored. Anything we bring in has to be either npip certified or pt/ai tested in the past 30 days.

Sally, question if you bring a non tested bird in and you are certified to do your own testing,do you only have to quarentine till the test comes back or do you have to have someone else come out also..

This is so much different than the guielines I try to follow,,,,maybe would of been cheaper in the long run,,,,,,,stainless steel is really pricey, an hot running water is harder to get some places than you would think.

You need to be a CPT to draw your own blood and do trach and cloacal swabs. Which also is NOT a big deal, we sat in a few hour class at harrisburg and then the area State Vet comes to test us on the field part. 10 bucks a year to renew.

Why do you need stainless and hot water? I have neither?????

I still think we need to use our OWN guidelines as there are ALOT more important diseases a new bird can bring in. I would assume if its been tested your ok at least for those tests. But you still have to worry about other issues for example Laryngotracheitis (LT), Mareks, Salmanella, Newcastle and on and on.

What is everyones quarantine practices now?

Below this is the federal provisions, not sure what would happen if someone not tested as stated ends up sending an AI bird, could really suck.

Do you have paperwork stating your are AI clean for how many days? like I said you are not the first I am coming accross that is checking in to making sure they are getting the correct labs done. You can do a trach swab every 90 instead of draw, which should be esp nice since it gets cold in winter and harder to drawl.

U.S. Avian Influenza Clean. This program is
intended to be the basis from which the breedinghatchery
industry may conduct a program for the prevention
and control of avian influenza. It is intended
to determine the presence of avian influenza in breeding
chickens through routine surveillance of each participating
breeding flock. A flock and the hatching
eggs and chicks produced from it will qualify for this
classification when the Official State Agency determines
that they have met the following requirements:
(1) It is a multiplier breeding flock in which a
minimum of 30 birds have been tested negative for
antibodies to avian influenza when more than 4
months of age. To retain this classification:
(i) A sample of at least 30 birds must be tested
negative at intervals of 90 days; or
(ii) A sample of fewer than 30 birds may be
tested, and found to be negative, at any one time if all
pens are equally represented and a total of 30 birds is
tested within each 90-day period; or
(iii) The flock is tested as provided in §145.14(d)
at intervals of 30 days or less and found to be negative,
and a total of 30 samples are collected and tested
within each 90-day period; and
(2) During each 90-day period, all multiplier
spent fowl, up to a maximum of 30, must be tested
and found negative within 21 days prior to movement
to slaughter.

ANOTHER PLUS to adding the AI testing is that you are then part of the indemnity program, so if its found in your flock you can gain some of your losses back as there is SUPPOSED to be funds in federal in such case. its at the end of the provisions book.

Nice. Does your wife still work in horticulture? We Re-joined last weekend and I'm trying to get there as much as possible.

3 week absence. Yup.
100+ pages of messages to read. Yup.
At least I know what I'll be doing with my coffee break!

She does still work in Horticulture. She did a stint with Morris Arboretum for a year or so. Then she did an AmeriCorps contract for the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society for a year. Now she's an independant "Fine Gardening" contractor. Plantings, Prunings, basically anything too skilled to leave for your landscape crew. She keeps a couple of local (Swarthmore area) clients, a few on the main line, and a few little old ladies who live near Elkin's Park who she's simply too fond of to leave. :)

Quote: This is kind of what I was getting at, but did not want to sound rude to those that go for npip,,,,you are only testing for specific disease even though there's a host of others out there, an not sure about the egg part, do those 2 diseases even pass with the egg.

because most of our business is in the meaty end of poultry, we are trying to get to the point that we could pass inspection for a license even though we do not need it at this point....biggest obstacle here is the price of stainless equipment
