I slipped, like in an old three stooges movie, both feet straight up in the air and flat on my back. I am laying in 2 degree weather laughing at myself. HA! I get up and check on my girls and the home depot water supply that was supposed to stay warm turned into an orange 5 gallon lollipop with all frozen nipples.
There was still water in the other heated waterer which is just a plastic rectangular bowl. It was low and needed refilled. So I walk 350 feet back up the hill and get more water. I came back down even more cautiously and still managed to fall again and roll down the hill with a gallon milk container of water. I was freakin frozen down there.
I got up went to the coop and put the water in the bowl. I grabbed my chair and stepped into the coop and sat inside with them to warm up a bit. All 24 of us just sitting there looking at each other. Me in my chair and them in there roosts.

I have repeatedly asked myself the past few days " why the heck would I get pets that I have to haul buckets of food water out to on blistery cold mornings at 6am before work!" Because they are fun to watch lol. I think I'm the only one cold. All of the ducks, geese and chicken wandered around outside like nothing was going on. Seriously...don't they watch the weather channel?!

Quote: Actually the sport above is the younger one, the other guy has been doing the job until recently. I have them all running together in the layer pen for the winter to save some major work in have two more coops/pens. I need to get set up better just havent figured it out..... my goal is to turn a huge wood shed I have into breeding pens and have a shared heat with wire centers, shared food water system for 2 pens, that way I can still separate them and save work in all season having that sharing system.

I raise 7 types of pheasants 150 in all. I also have ducks geese peacocks and some huge Flemish giant rabbits { 37 lbs.} My wife would love to have some button quail in our house for her to baby. She is great with all my birds and I would love to make this happen for her. My problem is no-one has heard of button quail here in northern Wisconsin. If any-one can help me find 15 to 20 it would be fantastic. I have already built the correct cage to house them and have done a lot of research as to food and care. please contact me with any ideas. thanks....carver. p.s. I chainsaw cut wooden bears for a hobby. contact Greg at 9205597479
Darn! too late I sold all buttons! I will have to tell chad to come have a look at your post, he wants to get into pheasants and peacocks!

I hope you're feeling alright now, I notice the 'day after' is always a little worse than the actual fall.

Hope you are feeling OK after your falls... the next day usually does hurt worse, as Sally said.
Glad we aren't the only ones with chairs at the coop, we have spent many hours just 'visiting with the birds' when we go out to do our evening chores and treat time. It does pay off.
One of our little barnyard mixes who is just 16 weeks old was always people shy till I started making a point to single her out for special treats and attention in the evenings... one of our warmer days last week she was being chased around by a young roo when I was walking to the coop, when she saw me she made a beeline for me and literally hid behind my legs. I shooed the rooster away and went into their run and was about tripping over her for the next 10 minutes, she stuck that close. She now routinely approaches me... a total 180 from 4 weeks ago. Her two hatchmates are about the same. So time just spent 'chilling with the peeps' can have extra benefits.

Crazyray- that is just hilarious, afterwards of course! Been there too only the milk jug busted and I had to go the almost 1/4 mile back up to the house for more:) I'm working on moving all of the coops down to one area but for now just the 1 is at the bottom of the hill. Did you get bruised up? Hope you're okay today.

Hi new here to the site. We live in Bethel Berks County PA. We currently have 2 Buff Orpingtons, and 3 New Hampshire Rocks. All hens. We are kind of new at this, and are learning every day. Dealing with the cold weather is a learning experiance and now we are dealing with frost bite combs and frozen water buckets that have a bucket heater in them. Love the Buff's, so we ordered 10 for free ranging 2 Roos and 8 girls. Were hoping to get bigger buffs so we can use them for dual purpose. Let me know if we have our own web site for the PA chicken people? Dennis Schools 221 Camp Strauss Road Bethel PA. 19507 717-865-6473
Welcome! I recommend only having one roo for 10 hens, they may fight. You can always eat one if it gets mean. Actually I take that back. They may be fine.
O.K., what do they look like?
Absolutely phenomenal! They are something I would love to have one day. Can't find any for sale though. If I had one, I'd love him forever. He could sleep on my pillow I'd love him so much. ^_^
Sleep on your pillow? :lau Sally Sunshine sells them.

Ray: I rolled down a bank the other night while we were trying to get our camper unstuck from the driveway. Tripped on stumps in the neighbor's yard, did a roll & slid the rest of the way down on my rear. I was soaked since it was raining & everything was melting right before the big freeze. I had to run around freezing my rear off for the next 2 hours. I hurt like heck for 2 days. My CL boy is the youngest so is bottom of the pecking order. He needs some girls of his own so I can give them their own pen. HEY SALLY!!!!
