Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

I may have a problem.
Is it normal for my hen to be molting at this time?
We have 5 Hens. 3 New Hampshire Reds and 2 Buff Orphingtons
1 of my New Hampshire Reds is showing a rapid loss of feathers around the head and spreading downward.
All the other chickens look normal.
The only thing that we did lately was put some vaselene on thier combs about a week ago.
It looks like she may also be loosing weight, but then she is loosing feathers so that may not be a factor.
I kinda new at this, so Id figgure Id ask?
We are getting 2 to 3 eggs a day from the group, and we don''t see anything out of the norm except for the loss of feathers from our one girl.
I have birds that molt at all different times in the year. Its just not a fall thing. I have one that's practically naked right now. I tried to get an ugly chicken picture of her, but she ran away, LOL.

It was a hen, right? Roosters don't seem to care how they look, but the hens get mad at you when you try to take a picture and their hair is messed up.

I wonder if I could use this to sex day old chicks . . .

This looks like a HUGE amount of work.

Your dedication to your birds is impressive.......
with moving all your belongings and having to deal with all kinds of unusual weather challenges........selling and downsizing your flock and then re-establishing living quarters.......at holiday time......this just seems like a huge huge task.......

WHAT DO YOU EAT FOR BREAKFAST  in order check of stuff on that TO DO LIST.........

I don't know you personally----------just reading your posts and wondering how anyone can do so much in such a short time...............

Breakfast? What's that? Sleep? What's that? Lol You forget there are also 2 kids & a man in the house to keep track of. The man gets this ultimatum, "Get your butt out there & help or find somewhere else to live." Since I pay all the bills I can get away with that. I make him earn his keep. I keep telling him, "If I have to do everything myself then there is no point in you being here. If you don't want to help I will find someone who does." (This is the main reason I refuse to marry him. He thinks once I say yes he can be lazy because I'm stuck with him. Doesn't work that way here.)

Anybody in the state sell turkey chicks?
Thinking about getting a couple for next Thanksgiving and Christmas

I will have BBBs and BBWs and I am going to breed Bourbon Red x Black Spanish this year.  I won't be selling the meat bird chicks, but I will sell adult birds later on in the year.

I cleaned out, too.  I had around 200 before fall.  I have the trio of turkeys, pair of geese, 16 Ameraucanas, around 24 Mille Fleur bantam Cochins, 8 BC x MF bantam Cochins, 14-ish bantam Chocolate Orps, 17 black bantam Cochins, 6 BBS bantam Orps and now a brooder of about 20 chicks!  I "wintered" with around 90 birds... Wintering being 2 months.

I already have 3 batches of chicks set. Now just waiting on the turkeys & waterfowl to get laying so I can fill the other 2 bators.

Should be a good structure for you once the work is done.... awesome that it is two storied to allow you a good goat area also, will be nice for you to have them both together to reduce carrying things all over at chore time!

That bank to the lower level is a muddy mess. I' m already planning a set of stairs down that bank.

I've been hatching for over a month now. I turned the 'bator back on around the beginning of December. I have 4 hatches in the brooder, but the hatches have been small. I wasn't getting any eggs at first, but I set what I was getting. Fertility is down in many of my pens. Of course, it's a Cochin thing so I will have to trim butts. I am running 90-95% fertility in my MFC and BC/MFC pens now. Since I set up the lights, I get between 9-18 eggs a day now. I am setting every 5 or so days, so having the eggs set that long does not help fertility either.

Yep, hatching season is upon us! I can say that I am very thankful that I now have an off season, though. Since getting the Sportsman, I hatch enough Jan-Jun that I can shut down in June and have plenty of eggs to sell afterwards. I know to get anyplace on my projects I should hatch everything, but I don't have the space to house all the birds I could potentially hatch! And what's worse is this year hatching season started early. I did that so I wasn't dealing with fertility issues into March like last year! Hopefully I won't get any brooder illnesses like last year, either. I lost over half the chicks I hatched because of whatever it was. I have no ducks this year, so no wet bedding to cause any illnesses!

Good Morning Pennsylvania! Silkie, nice structure! Should be a safe place to kidd, when the time comes.

@Lisa, breakfast is an issue! A handful of cashews sure helps to take the edge off in the morning.

There were fox mating in the corn field just aside our property this morning, I drug DH out of the shower and held onto the dog, but he missed. I really need to learn how to shoot the gun.
