Crazy people! Makes you wonder where their brain is at.. Lol

Congrats DH Any of the remaining 6 more those German NH's?...pretty unusual birds

Yes! I set 4 of the GNH eggs and they all hatched. Well, I helped a little, I seriously can't stand to let a chick die in the shell!

I'm fairly certain they came from the GNH pen and the eggs are the right size and color, but the chicks seem to vary in color more than I expected. Anyone know what a NH chick is supposed to look like? I've seen a lot of RIR and RSL (that get the pullet down color for the RIR male), but none look like that. The first one was dark colored, the others seem yellow, but maybe they got mixed up somehow.

No worries, I'll raise them all up and sort it out later. Maybe I'll goggle for picks later. Cackle hatchery probably has a video of theirs.

DH:

They should look just like a NH(?)....the story was there was an American competition around 1942...to breed better chickens (part of the war effort) NH's won the competition...at the end of WWII there were no chickens left in Germany, so the US set up a program to restock German farms with NH stock.....they been over there ever since and have only recently been brought back to the US...don't think there should be major differences....just they focused on the duel purpose as apposed to US where we bred separate for eggs and meat....My understands (for better or worse)

Thanks Stake, I called before I saw this post, and I heard they have chicks. I'm off to get my chickies!!! Wish me luck! I have company joining me for moral support/fun time/ stock up on feed. (As I'm writing this, the resident birds *parrots* are already saying Peep Peep Peep Peep! Wonder if they will pick up the chickie peeps.

I found some pics on cacklehatchery's website and they are straight up yellow, not reddish or striped. I'm gonna go look at them again.

BTW, a little search tip -- searching for "New Hampshire chicks" can produce some "spurious" results you might not want to have in your search history !!

I have at least 8 chicks that are all yellow and could pass for the NH chicks I found a picture of. Thing is, I also set some mystery eggs that I didn't have a source pen for. Some of those could easily have been NH's as well, I just assumed they were the others since the mixes are laying better now. Looking in my records, 4 or 5 of those that hatched fell in the same weight range that the NH's have been producing. Could it be that they are all new hampshires? Wouldn't that be great! Just the fact that I got 100% of the known eggs to hatch is very nice. I have 5 more of their eggs going into lockdown in a week.

okay----problem alert

mice or rodents or worse around the coop!

Oh no!

what are your best remedies.

I have been reading about poison vs electric traps vs glue...............

I would never use poison as chicken could eat the poison mice and die also.

Here is a video on how to build a bucket trap for mice. You can either choose to trap and release elsewhere or put water in the bucket and they will drown.

The only thing I've had to deal with was those **** voles. I hate those things so much! D:

The way I got rid of them was to remove the food source. I raised the quail's feeder and switched the chickens to straight fermented feed which they gobble up within a few hours and leave none for the voles. Since doing this they've moved out. Haven't seen them or heard them squeaking around under the straw in the quail pen for a couple of weeks now.

If making food unavailable didn't work I'd have put out the rat traps around the back side of the coop.

I love that bucket mouse trap idea up there though too. I will have to try that sometime.

My younger daughter would love that because we can catch the mice and take them somewhere else and set them free.
