I would wait and see. I doubt it's lice of mites at this age and with no exposure to adult birds (or wild birds). I have only recently recalled the problems I had with lice when I was young. I haven't seen lice on the farm at all and I think it might be because all the chickens dust bathe freely on the farm.

Lice will show up first around the vent and later under their wings and on their heads. Just check their vents from time to time and you'll recognize a problem because you know what normal look like.

my chickens are almost one year old..................maybe 9 months...............

One chicken is 1.5 yrs old...............

I will check the vents etc.............just wasn't sure if you were thinking mine were younger?

Quite possible if they have been outside. Look for moving bugs. They are tiny & depending on what kind, may be black, brown, red or sandy colored. If it moves, it's a bug. Treat it if it moves.

the tsc did not have SEVIN powder....................they did have some garden and poultry powder but I did not buy it because it had all these warnings on it about how dangerous it is for humans to breath in etc etc...............sounded like hazardous materials for ME>
I am not sure if I am recalling the name of the active ingredient correctly..........please forgive this attempt............but I think it was something like pethermin? I know that is not really it..........but close.....

I will have to check what I have...........

I have used some powder to keep the smell of the coop down...............and I clean with a combination of vinegar and water in a spray bottle..........I also have DE yet have heard the full range of opinions on that...............

Stake----I am not really sure what you meant on your post.............??

all my chickens have been outside.....................they live in their coop and have a run.................and they are about 9 months to 1.5 yrs old.

so they have definitely come into contact with bugs etc..................

It seems like just one of them has this extra stuff at the base of her feathers............or around the shaft....................

Pitch em out. They'll be fine now as long as they have a secure coop at night & can huddle together. My 3-6 week olds are off heat & only in the garage in wire cages. Gets just as cold out there as outside when the lamps are off.

I was told that at 6 weeks of age
if it stays 40 degrees or more at night
and when you have a safe set up for them...........

so I think you are probably ready................I don't know what our temps are at night.............but you can look that up..............

if you add a little more pine shavings they will have some extra warmth maybe............or if they are able to be together on a roost?

Plus if I remember your coop.............I think you only had ventilation near the top? so its pretty contained and all..................

I am not expert but that is the info I have gotten from others........

Permethrin is a synthetic version of Pyrethrin (not sure about the spelling on those, but too lazy to check), Pyrethrin is an organic pesticide made from a wild flower in the chrysanthemum family. However, organic does not mean safe in any circumstance, Chysanthemums are toxic too in some quantity.

I would rate Permethrin as a little safer than Sevin, though anything that kills lice effectively has some side effects. Even DE, if inhaled, is very bad for you and the birds.

I used Sevin 40 years ago and it was very effective, even in small quantities, and moderation is your friend here, use a very small amount of either insecticide and check again in a few days, if you see any bugs remaining, treat again.

Also, the eggs will not be killed and you will need to re-treat again (I can't remember the interval, but it's probably on the bag). Time that second treatment well and the next generation will be killed before they lay eggs.

What would you do ???

pigeons were out in full force today,,, They live in our silo....noticed a fresh pile of poo from one of them and thought I saw roundworms in it,,,, I hate to toss eggs but would you go ahead and worm everybody,,,, I also hate to medicate when not needed, but these pigeons are here and if they have worms it's a good chance everyone does...

I searched like an idiot walking around the pens looking at poo, didn't see any, but.........

is there any kind of worm med that does not have a withdrawal time...

See you guys at the Uniontown swap!!! I have long brown hair and will have a red little wristlet with white flowers on it :) Don't be afraid to come say hi because I love meeting you guys! :)
