Happy Mother's day to all the moms and grandmas out there. I scored a truck load of free wood and shingled roof. Drove an hour to get it but I have plans for it. Chicken coop or storage shed or maybe a rabbit hutch. lol Hubby says shed to store chicken stuff instead of his mancave. :( We need to pull out a buttload of nails in the 2x4 but I still think it was worth it.
awesome score!!

"As for feed:
I use a 22% crumble that my mill makes called Turkey Fast Grow for all of my babies. I have chicks, ducks, turkeys, quail & guineas all eating it until about 8-10 weeks or whenever they get tossed in the adult pens. Meaties get it til about 5 weeks then get switched to my cheaper adult food, which is still pretty high protein. Baby food is non medicated. I also ferment from day 1 for everyone.
Older birds get a mix I have my mill make that's about 18% protein. It's 60% layer mash, 5% barley, 5% wheat, 5% dry molasses, 5% whole corn & 20% distiller's mash. There's some soy, but not a lot since the mash is also almost half distiller's grain. This mix gets fermented when weather permits to cut waste & boost productivity. I have also been known to add cayanne pepper when laying slacks in winter to get them back in gear."

**Silkie- I know this was from 3 days ago, when everyone was talking about feed...I am still trying to play "catch-up"..anyway..you mentioned adding 'cayenne pepper" to the feed when laying slacks off...what does cayenne do for them to help boost their laying prowess? Just wondering because mine have fell-off a bit, I think more from getting the "broody-bug"...i am ready to change out some hens here ...seriously!

...glad I have some extra cages..going to have to "break" some broodiness....this is not fun at all!

My turkey hatch will be a bust, I removed all of those eggs last night, many never even started, wondering if that box went thru xray.-..so I am back in the search for midget whites....
Actually just about everything in that incubator was bad, wonder if my temps are not jumping around when I am at work....

I think most of the problems are caused by me not having the time to care for the incubator, they never get turned on time and I know the temps swing cause the thermometer keeps track of high and low...

Anyone with midget white poults or I would consider Beltsville if the price was right....
Is it to late to try and order them from a hatchery...
Have you
Hatched turkeys before? They are very finicky and very stupid until they reach adulthood.

I hate using my iPad on here. I clicked to quote a bunch of posts and they disappeared! Ugh!

Love the baby goats! I keep begging my hubby. Hopefully he will give in soon.

We spent Mother's Day at the flea market and then a cookout at my sisters house. I bought an old wooden coffee grinder for $3 to be used as a decoration. A chicken sign to pretty up my coop and an old silver pitcher to be used as a vase.

I think I'm ready to fire up the incubator. I'm looking for serema, silkie and any breed of frizzled. Can anyone help me out?

Yes, and turkey seem to be giving me the hardest time lately,

I just do not have time to tend to the incubator like it should be, it can be days between checking it.

My busiest work times coincide with spring hatching, really throws me off.

Spangled/mottled Cubalaya cockerel. This is the body posture we breed for.

Showing off the wide tail that the breed is supposed to be known for, also called a lobster tail.

Sally can hook you up with the CUTEST frizzled seramas. I only have one but it's a black (maybe mottled) frizzle chick and is the cutest lil' chick I think I've ever owned.
