Your hens look like red sex links. Great egg laying machines

Are their beaks trimmed? I am on my phone and can't tell for sure.

Not sure if you were talking to me or not, but I'm going to answer lol. Yes their beaks are trimmed and they do NOT like it (especially when they tried to tackle an ear of corn
hmm.png
), one of them, Gertty's, is trimmed very poorly and the top is shorter than the bottom. One of them, Peckers', is not trimmed much at all and so she got most of the corn hehe. Which is fine by me since we feel sorry for her as she has no feathers on her back, not quite sure why though.

So, we haven't gotten any eggs yet, which could be due to them adjusting to the new environment or... because their peak production days are behind them. They are entertaining though and seemed to get used to us fairly quickly, guess that will happen when you spn most of the day in the run with them hehe

Here are some pics of our adventurous day with the girls.

Around 10am I decided to chop up some different foods to find out what they like. We had tomato, apple, red & green pepper, celery, carrot and hot dog (I know, I know lol). Well the results are in...

They ate it ALL, saved the celery and carrots for last. Tomatoes, hot dogs and red peppers were the clear winners!

Oh, here's their completed coop! They don't go back in till dusk, so we've decided to make the water bucket portable... duh us.

This is Penelope, she knows she's the prettiest hehe (and we think the oldest).

Miss Gertrude after her 2nd dirt bath; "Dirty Gertty".

Fresh pulled weeds are the hot spot in this chicken playground!!

The infamous ear of corn making it's late afternoon debut.

They're no longer impressed with my phone's camera sound, just going about their business.

This is Miss Peckerton the IV (Peckers), is her lack of feathers from molt, bullying or a quick last minute romp with a Roo before leaving the farm?!

A snack before bed.

And finally Zero figuring out the swing once the other girls were in the coop!! We were wondering if she as going to do anything "note worthy" and boy did she
clap.gif

So that's we spent the day with our new girls!! Hopefully we'll get some eggs soon, if not, they have to go back to auction, the coop gets scrubbed down andthey get replaced with pullets *sigh*. The whole point of this advenure is for eggs

Storm moving thru, guess mother nature is telling me, it's time to quit for the day. Still searching for large quantities of quail eggs, I hate buying from eBay.
I still owe you eggs. Would you like quail instead of the originals? I have several colors together in both regular & jumbo all together.
Works for me, I am always on the lookout for quail.
Gotcha! I'll collect everything this week & send out Sat before we start loading the truck.
All: My broody has only hatched one little one...I am going to give it a day or two more before removing the eggs...but, she has been on eggs for around 30 days....(the first two a week ago didn't make it, and her sister continues to lay in her box)....so....A) am I putting mama at risk letting her stay on eggs...B) she has only one baby...not preferred, but should I let her raise it or re-home?
If she's looking thin slip her a couple more chicks if you can & steal the rest of the eggs. If she looks ok & the baby can get to food & water then she's ok to sit as long as she can still take care of the baby too.
Got 3 of 5 pens cleaned today, that has to be good for someone of my age.......nice big pile of crap to be spread tomorrow. Is saying, I sat down and can not get back up the same as iv'e fallen and can't get up...cause I am there.
I know that feeling all too well.
These are 2 of my EE's from this years bunch! They are both 13 weeks old so hopefully only about 3 more weeks until they start laying! Anyway, the cockerel's name is bacon and I don't know a name for my pullet. What do you all think her name should be? Oh, and next year these 2 are going to be together so do you think there is a good chance of their chicks having the same color as the hen since they both are blue and red?
Look like blue partridge to me or at least a variant of it. You should get blue & blue partridge as well as black & splash if I remember right.
I can ship & have about 30 of the poliskies running around under 3 weeks old. I also have a few ee bantamms, rainbow babies & polbars (another project, polish x cream legbar, they have mohawks...lol) PM me for pricing. The more you take the better the deal I can make you...lol Trying to clear out as many as possible before the move next weekend.
I need a frizzle polish silkie that lays blue or green eggs......I think it should be your next project! Lol It would be the ultimate chicken! All my favs rolled into one!
I don't have any frizzles, but you can make the blue egger polish silkies by crossing my poliskies with my polbars. Then you just have to toss a frizzle in the mix the next time around...lol

Yo go girl! Today is day two of our yard sale and things have been slow. Hoping for a better turn out today! I don't want to lug three AC Units back into the house!

I think your chickens are so lucky to have found their way into your home and lovely setup. I'm sure they will start laying soon, once they get adjusted!c:D

Anne, did you put the AC units it's on Craigs list too? That should bring some buyers for you.

Kling, just LOVE your set up. I hope you get some eggs. Loss of feathers on the back is most likely from breeding. They all look like they are going through a molt to me. If you're comfortable handling them, you could fan out a wing and look for new feather growth, the new feathers start at the axial which is in the center of the wing. They should have given you at least one egg, even if they stop from stress, there should have been one egg 'in the chute'.

Edited for spelling errors

I certainly hope so Anne! Nothing in the nesting boxes (or loft or coop) yet except poop *sigh*. This morning's treats were tomato, green pepper, banana and YOUGURT... what a hilarious mess that was!! They were literally licking it off each other, which caused a little bickering hehe

Hey Blarney, how can I tell if they're egg bound? 2 of the girls are quite rosey and puffy looking "down there". Also, I am getting a little more comfortable with handling them, had to pick Zero up to put her in the coop last night and she made quite a aquawk bout it... until I held her close and whispered my apologies lol. I did notice some tiny feathers under Gertty's wing when she was sun bathing earlier, so I'll get a closer look at that later.

Thanks for all your input, advice and knowledge guys! Don't know where I would be without you

We normally throw together a wish list at the beginning of the summer where each member of the family chooses a day trip. This year I was thinking of giving myself the challenge of mastering one video game that each of my children play. It goes against everything I think that summer should be about, but may give me some common ground with the kiddoes. If you can't beat em, join em!

Kling, I'm not exactly sure on the egg bound symptoms, when we've had egg bound chickens before our symptoms included staying in the nest box for prolonged periods without being broody, and a prolapsed vent.

Question for those that use broody's, I have had them hatch eggs in the past but never paid much attention.

Hubby found z good deal on some Beltsville turkey eggs ( not the midget white's, but close enough).. I have 5 broody's right now, do you think they would do OK with turkey eggs..
12 eggs split up between broody's might just work if I can find a way to desperate them from the flock.

KlingKlan now would be the perfect time for a spring tuneup for your new hens. Every spring I dust my girls for bugs, trim their nails and worm them with Safeguard or Valbazen. Then I repeat the worming in 10 days.

Your hens are obviously molting now and probably won't be laying for about a month. So if you worm them now and repeat in 10 days, you won't miss many eggs, even after discarding eggs for 2 weeks.

Rule of thumb about treats..........treats should not make up more than 10% of a hen's diet. She will need as much protein as possible in her diet to finish her molt so she can begin laying again.

Good luck and enjoy your girls!
